WRTA’s Federal Street Station to get new mural

YOUNGSTOWN — The Western Reserve Transit Authority’s Federal Street Station is getting a new mural.

The mural of the WRTA’s new logo in blue and green with a white graphic wrapping will be painted by Pat McGlone.

McGlone has painted numerous murals, including several in Youngstown such as on Erie Terminal Place, the Apollo Building, Penguin City Brewing Co. and the Varsity Club. The city’s design review committee approved the mural request at its Tuesday meeting.

The committee also approved two sign requests from the Western Reserve Port Authority.

One was for a new City Centre One sign at the WRPA-owned building at 100 E. Federal St.

The WRPA also will replace the existing two double doorways with one central doorway with new windows installed around the doorway.

The other is for new signs for the Mocha House, which moved across the street from the former Eastern Gateway Community College building at 101 E. Boardman St.

The Mocha House had to move out of the structure because demolition of the building and attached parking deck will be starting in the late spring. The demolition project is expected to be done in the early fall.

The Mocha House was the only business located inside the former Eastern Gateway building.

The Mahoning County commissioners signed an agreement in January with the WRPA for the demolition and for work on a new structure to serve as a centralized county government center.

The project is estimated to cost $60 million. Construction should begin in early 2027 and be done by early 2028.

Most of the parking deck was closed a few years ago because of its poor condition. The remainder of the deck closed a year ago.

Classes at Eastern Gateway stopped Oct. 31, 2024, three years after the Higher Learning Commission put the college on probation over a questionable relationship with a for-profit company that saw the school’s online enrollment skyrocket. The U.S. Education Department investigated Eastern Gateway in 2022 and ordered it to stop programs that let numerous students enroll at no cost.

The college permanently closed Sept. 30, 2025. The WRPA took ownership of the building Sept. 3, 2025.

Starting at $3.23/week.
