McDonald looks to add disc golf course

McDONALD — Village officials are looking to add a smaller-scale disc golf course to Woodland Park and were told there would be no cost to the village.

Brad Silvers with Turbo Putts Disc Golf spoke to council at the April 22 meeting about being able to put in a scaled-back disc golf course with 10 baskets this summer at Woodland Park. Silvers, who has done disc golf courses in Niles, Howland and Warren, said this year he can lease the baskets for a semi-permanent course to the village, which may consider having a full-scale disc golf course in the future.

“I would like the village to begin with a family-friendly disc golf course to get the community involved. All ages can play disc golf,” Silvers said, noting the longest hole would be 300 feet.

He said work could be done in the summer and early fall. Mayor Ray Lewis said there is a need to seek grants for a future disc golf course.

Councilwoman Kerry Reckard said she would like the course to be ready for the annual fall Oktoberfest.

PARK ATTENDANTS

In other business, officials said they are concerned they have received only three applicants for summer park attendants because they are hoping to have seven or eight. Lewis said he understands that at minimum wage for a park attendant, graduating McDonald seniors can find other higher-paying jobs for the summer. He suggested seeing if juniors would be interested in being park attendants or seeing if any of last summer’s park attendants are interested in coming back.

Members of council said the pay may need to be reviewed. Park attendants help run the summer youth programs by working with Park Director Heidi Hoffman.

In other matters, council:

• Set the Memorial Day service for 1 p.m. May 25 at the war memorial in Woodland Park.

• Heard from Lauren Hill, director of government affairs for the Trumbull County Engineer’s Office, about how the engineer’s office can help the village by seeking quotes or bids for road, culvert and ditching projects.

• Rejected a bid of $2,000 for a 2006 firetruck, indicating the minimum amount was $10,000.

• Accepted the resignation of Jake Olsen as a firefighter since he is moving from the village.

• Gave first reading to a motion on adopting a cybersecurity program.

Starting at $3.23/week.
