Motorcyclist shot to death on West Side

YOUNGSTOWN — A man driving a motorcycle was shot to death Tuesday on Youngstown’s West Side.

A Youngstown police report states that officers were called to the intersection of North Maryland and Oakwood avenues on the West Side at 7:16 p.m. Officers were told it was a possible accident with injuries “where a man fell off his bike with a young child on board,” the report states.

But when officers arrived, they saw that the driver had serious injuries and was covered in blood, the report states. He was loaded into a private vehicle and was taken to St. Elizabeth Youngstown Hospital, where he was pronounced dead from a gunshot wound, the report states.

Detectives and crime lab personnel were sent to the scene to investigate. The police report refers to the incident as a homicide.

THIRD OF THE YEAR

Tuesday’s homicide marks the third one in Youngstown this year. The second homicide was the April 1 shooting death of Charles Pullen Jr., 17, in the 100 block of East Judson Avenue on the South Side.

Police officers were called to that location for a ShotSpotter notification. ShotSpotter notifies police of gunfire on the South Side.

Shortly after the ShotSpotter notification, Pullen was taken by private vehicle to St. Elizabeth Youngstown Hospital with at least one gunshot wound. He was later pronounced dead.

The 100 block of East Judson Avenue is close to South Avenue.

The first homicide of the year was the March 20 shooting death of Terrance Simms Jr., 24, outside a barber shop on Canfield Road near Glenwood Avenue on the South Side.

A city news release stated that the shooting took place in front of 719 Canfield Road. A Youngstown Police Department report gave the time of the call as 12:04 p.m. and stated that officers responded to the location and saw a customer of the business, identified in the report as an “involved person,” standing on the front porch of the barber shop.

The person “pointed to the ground” at the victim, the report states. It was later clarified that the victim was in the parking lot.

The report noted that other officers arrived at the scene, and an officer identified all of the people who were inside the barber shop, calling them “involved persons.” The report suggested that there were about five “involved persons” inside the barber shop.

The city had 13 homicides in 2025, the last one of the year being Nov. 10, 2025 — about 130 days before the Simms homicide.
