Man pleads not guilty to domestic violence
Bearded dragon lizard thrown during altercation in Boardman
BOARDMAN — A man is facing charges after allegedly assaulting a family member.
A Boardman police report states that Tre Xavier McDaniel, 33, of Youngstown, turned himself in Monday on a warrant for domestic violence. McDaniel appeared Monday in Mahoning County Boardman Court, where he pleaded not guilty to one count of domestic violence, a first-degree misdemeanor, and Judge Joseph Houser imposed a $10,000 cash or surety bond and ordered him to have no contact with the victim, court records show.
McDaniel has been on the lam since Sept. 13, when the report states he assaulted a female family member he was living with at the time. The report states the woman told police the fight began after she confronted him about money he owed her for bills.
When she walked into his room to ask him for the money, he became combative, called her an expletive and threw his pet bearded dragon at her.
The report states the woman told police she then flipped the lizard’s tank over, and McDaniel became more irate, grabbed her, threw her on the bed and started shaking her. She told police that she could not be sure if McDaniel hit her or if she hit herself while he was violently shaking her.
McDaniel left the house and may have been picked up by his cousin.
While police were investigating, McDaniel called and asked to speak to the officer in charge of the case. He denied any wrongdoing or violence. He said the woman was the aggressor, but declined to come to the station to make a formal statement.
He told police he would only speak to them with an attorney present and would come to the police station when he had found a lawyer to come with him.
The report states that police filed charges against him based on the woman’s visible wounds and her statement.
Court records show that McDaniel has prior criminal convictions from 2012 and 2022 for drug and theft offenses. Some of those were felonies pleaded down to misdemeanors.
Public records do not show that McDaniel is in jail.
The report also does not indicate the condition of the lizard that was thrown.
