2 people shot Sunday in Youngstown
YOUNGSTOWN — Two people were shot on West Dennick Avenue on the South Side about 11:45 p.m. Sunday, but both were in stable condition, Capt. Jason Simon of the detective division said Monday.
A Youngstown police report states that officers were called to West Dennick for a shooting. Before officers arrived, two people were transported to St. Elizabeth Youngstown Hospital by private vehicle.
Crime lab personnel and detectives were called to the scene to investigate.
EARLY SATURDAY
It was one of several incidents over the Halloween weekend, including an incident at 6:48 a.m. Saturday in which a juvenile was taken to the Mahoning County Juvenile Justice Center on a possibly high-level felony charge.
The girl was charged for allegedly bringing a knife when she entered a home without permission and argued with people at a home on East Judson Avenue on the South Side. Officers were called there for a fight with a weapon and spoke with the victim, who said the suspect forced her way into the home and threatened her.
The person said the suspect was at the home because the suspect’s ex-girlfriend was braiding hair there.
Several hours earlier, the suspect and the ex-girlfriend got into an argument, and the victim told the suspect she needed to leave because of her disruptive behavior and because there were small children in the home.
The suspect left but came back and tried to talk to her ex-girlfriend without success. The victim said the suspect entered the home that time without permission.
The victim threatened to wake up her husband, which she did. Then the suspect threatened the victim and her husband, the report states. The suspect was holding a folding knife during that conversation and threatened to use it, a police report states. The victim got the knife away from the suspect and got the suspect to leave.
But later the suspect returned and broke objects in the house. The victim removed the suspect and called 911. Officials at the Mahoning County Juvenile Justice Center told police they would accept the juvenile, and she was taken there by police.
AVONDALE INCIDENT
In a separate incident at 5:23 p.m. Saturday on East Boston Avenue, a police officer was working side employment at St. Dominic Church on East Lucius Avenue on the South Side when he heard gunshots. He investigated and spoke to two juveniles, who said he and his friend were walking on Avondale Avenue near Southern Boulevard when they heard gunshots and saw a vehicle with four males wearing masks inside a car, shooting at another vehicle, which was shooting back.
The boys ran when the vehicles came in their direction. Officers went to Avondale Avenue and saw six spent bullet shell casings, which were recovered as evidence.
POSSIBLY RELATED
In a separate incident at 10:54 p.m. Saturday, police were alerted to a vehicle in the city that might have been involved in the “shooting incident” earlier Saturday near St. Dominic Church.
Officers spotted a white Jeep Wagoneer merging onto Interstate 680 south from Oakwood Avenue on the West Side. Officers saw the vehicle taking up two lanes as it headed toward the Market Street exit. The officer activated lights and siren to make a stop on an individual police identified.
The driver accelerated to speeds as high as 120 mph, disregarding traffic control devices and leading officers on a 30-minute chase that went to Frizzleburg, Pa., and then back into Youngstown, the report states.
Spike strips were used to disable the vehicle at Livingston and Oak streets on the East Side of Youngstown, where two males exited and ran on foot, with an officer taking Christian Clinkscale, 19, into custody after using a stun gun on him.
Other officers ran after the other suspect, Marquel Winphrie, 19, but he was not captured until the Ohio State Highway Patrol and Campbell police, with a dog, located him in a garbage can on Landsdowne Boulevard on the East Side.
Clinkscale was arraigned Monday on felony failure to comply with an order or signal of a police officer and misdemeanor obstructing official business and driving in marked lanes. Winphrie was arraigned Monday on misdemeanor obstructing official business.
