Man charged with choking woman in Youngstown

YOUNGSTOWN — Gabriel T. Davis, 28, was arraigned Friday in Youngstown Municipal Court on charges of felony strangulation and misdemeanor assault and unlawful restraint for allegedly choking a woman multiple times Thursday.

The incident occurred at an address that was blacked out in a Youngstown police report under the provisions of Marsy’s Law, which protects victims of crime.

Police were called to a home at 1:54 p.m. A woman reported that Davis, her boyfriend, started beating her over an argument he had with someone else, according to a police report.

She said he hit her several times in her head and strangled her until she lost consciousness. She said she could remember going in and out of consciousness several times. When he stopped beating her, he locked her in a room and took away her phone so she could not leave or call police, the report states.

She woke up in the morning and got ready for work, then went to work, where she called 911. While the officer was writing his police report, Davis went to the business where the victim worked, but her manager would not let Davis see her. Another employee found the officer and told him that Davis was now walking on South Avenue.

The officer found Davis and detained him, finding that Davis also had warrants out of the courts in Boardman, Austintown, Campbell and Youngstown. Davis was taken to the Mahoning County jail.

Altogether, he had 13 active charges listed in Mahoning County jail records, most of them traffic related, in addition to the strangulation, assault and unlawful restraint.

Davis returns to Youngstown Municipal Court at 9:30 a.m. Sept. 12 for a preliminary hearing on the felony and pretrials on the misdemeanors.

If convicted of the felony, he could get several years in prison.

Starting at $3.23/week.
