YOUNGSTOWN — Mahoning County Common Pleas Court Judge Anthony D’Apolito set bond at $300,000 Monday for Terrance L. Jefferies, 64, of Roosevelt Drive in Campbell, on one count of rape and one felony count of compelling prostitution for which he was indicted Aug. 15.
Jefferies was booked into the Mahoning County jail Aug. 6 on charges filed by the Campbell Police Department, according to county jail records.
Mahoning County Assistant Prosecutor Caitlyn Andrews said bond in the case initially was set at $25,000 at the municipal court level, but she asked for it to be increased to $300,000, saying the rape charge carries a possible penalty of life in prison if convicted.
“So it is certainly about as serious as we can get when it comes to charges,” she said.
As for his criminal record, “it is quite extensive, dating back to 1986 for carrying a concealed weapon, drug trafficking, failure to comply, robbery, assault, domestic violence and contempt of court. That factor also weighs in favor of the state,” Andrews said.
As for whether Jefferies will show up to court, the seriousness of his rape charge would be an incentive to someone to “run and not show up to court,” Andrews said. And Jefferies’ contempt of court conviction shows that Jefferies “does not follow the rules that are setß by the court,” she said.
Mike Yacovone, Jefferies’ attorney, pointed out to the judge that Jefferies’ convictions “were when Mr. Jefferies was a much younger man.” Yacovone said it “doesn’t appear as though any infraction has been on his record for at least the last 20-plus years.”
Andrews disagreed.
“I know specifically some here as recent as 2022 was when he had a domestic violence conviction,” she said. And Jeffries’ contempt of court conviction was in 2016, she said.
D’Apolito agreed with Andrews, saying Jefferies’ rape charge is “as serious as they come, other than murder.”
According to Campbell Municipal Court records, bond was set at $25,000 in that court when Jefferies was arraigned on the rape charge Aug. 9, 2024. When D’Apolito asked Andrews why the bond was $25,000 at the municipal court level, Andrews said she did not know.
The case did not have a trial date in common pleas court before Monday’s hearing, but one was set for 8:30 a.m. July 28 after the hearing, according to court records.
Andrews said the reason the case didn’t have a trial date was that extraction of videos from a phone were still pending, but the videos have since been extracted, and plans were being formulated Monday for Yacovone to view the videos, Andrews said.
According to Vindicator files, Jefferies is accused of offenses that were reported to Campbell police June 13, 2024. Police were told that a girl sent images of herself to unknown adults and was taken to a home in Campbell to have sex with a man, according to a Campbell Police Department report.
