Bond revoked last week for Columbiana man charged with rape

YOUNGSTOWN — Judge Maureen Sweeney last week revoked the bond of Matthew J. Nicholson, 46, of Garfield Road in Columbiana, on three counts of rape and other charges after the judge found that Nicholson violated the terms of his probation for contacting the alleged victim.

The revocation took place a week ago, but Mahoning County jail records indicate he is not yet in custody.

County prosecutors filed a motion asking for Nicholson’s bond to be revoked June 3. Prosecutors stated they received information alleging that Nicholson “while out on bond, attempted to contact … one of the victims named in the case, in violation of the terms and conditions of his bond.”

The filing alleged that on May 29, Nicholson called the alleged victim on Facebook Messenger, the filing states. It called that a “direct violation of the terms and conditions of (Nicholson’s) bond.”

Sweeney’s entry approving the motion states that Nicholson “shall be held without bond pending further disposition by the court.”

After Nicholson was secretly indicted Jan. 16 on three counts of rape, one count of sexual battery, one count of aggravated drug possession and one count of receiving stolen property, bond of $500,000 was set at his Jan. 22 arraignment in Mahoning County Common Pleas Court.

Sweeney reduced Nicholson’s bond to $250,000 on Feb. 7. In both cases, one of the conditions of his bond was that he have no contact with the victim, according to court documents.

If Nicholson were to be convicted of the three counts of rape, he could get more than 30 years in prison.

His indictments allege he committed two rapes against a person in April 2024. Nicholson is accused of engaging in sexual conduct with the person by compelling the person to submit by force or threat of force. Nicholson also is accused of raping another person early 2023.

Starting at $3.23/week.
