Austintown man charged, then escapes from hospital
YOUNGSTOWN — Jamel R. Patton, 28, is charged with several felony offenses as a result of officers arresting him on a warrant Wednesday afternoon at the Circle K at 1821 Mahoning Ave., and Patton then fleeing from St. Elizabeth Youngstown Hospital. He was apparently still at large as of Thursday afternoon.
A Youngstown police report states that police officers observed Patton at the Circle K about 1:35 p.m. and knew that he had an active warrant and suspended driver’s license.
Officers observed Patton in a vehicle, then exiting the vehicle and walking around in the parking lot and changing parking spots multiple times.
Officers drove up behind Patton, who exited his vehicle and was detained in handcuffs. While talking to Patton, he tried to flee on foot before tripping and hitting his head on a patrol car. He was advised he was under arrest and was taken to St. Elizabeth Youngstown Hospital for evaluation, the report states.
Patton had an address on Laurie Drive in Austintown when he was charged with failure to control in Austintown in late April. A bench warrant was issued in that case in July, according to court records.
While conducting an inventory of Patton’s vehicle Wednesday, officers found narcotics, the report states. Patton was charged with a high-level drug possession, two low-level drug-possession charges and a mid-level drug-possession charge, plus misdemeanor obstructing official business. Officers confiscated $140 in cash.
When officers left him at the hospital, the report states Patton was advised if he left, he would be charged with escape.
But at 6:30 p.m., the hospital advised officers that Patton had fled from the hospital as he was being transported to get an X-ray. An additional high-level felony charge of escape was filed against him.
Jail records Thursday evening indicated that he was not in custody, and Youngstown Municipal Court records do not indicate that he has an arraignment date listed.
Patton is the same man who was charged with felonious assault and other offenses after reports said he dragged the trooper for a mile and a half in July 2018 on Kirk Road in Youngstown after Patton was pulled over for allegedly driving without headlights.
Then-Judge Lou D’Apolito of Mahoning County Common Pleas Court sentenced Patton to 4 1/2 years in prison in December 2018 after Patton pleaded guilty to felonious assault, failure to comply with the order of a police officer and being a felon in possession of a firearm.
