Hubbard Township continues meetings over Coalburg Lake

HUBBARD TOWNSHIP – Trustees will meet this month with representatives of the Ohio Department of Natural Resources, Trumbull County commissioners and Ohio Attorney General’s Office for the next steps for enhancing the Coalburg Lake property.

Trustee Jason Tedrow said at Tuesday’s trustees meeting to wait and see what the status is for the American Rescue Plan funds that were requested from the county commissioners to be used for a lake project.

“We are meeting to discuss where our next step is. Right now we are in holding pattern so we can look for additional sources of money,” he said. He said a meeting is planned for Tuesday.

Tedrow said officials are also waiting to see if any funds were approved from Federal Emergency Management Agency through ODNR. He said they should know the status of the funds this spring.

Residents at the meeting asked where funds will come from to fix the dam and maintain it as well as allowing public use. They also asked if officials have a plan in place.

Tedrow said the meeting will allow for updates from ODNR on a plan and status of funding sources.

“We want to be able to make the dam an asset to the community. We want to get the project moving forward,” Tedrow said.

Officials said it has been hard to sell the property because of the concern of the liability of the dam in its current state.

The majority of the dam and lake are in Hubbard Township with a portion in Brookfield. Officials said there are about 20 to 25 homes near the property.

“We want to get the property where it is publicly accessible and something for the community,” Tedrow said.

“No township dollars will be used for the project. We are seeking grants,” Wililiam Colletta, trustee chairman, said. Tedrow said owners of the property live in Chagrin Falls.

In other business, Trustee Rick Hernandez said the Eagle Joint Fire District is seeking a Staffing for Adequate Fire and Emergency Response grant that can be used to cover the costs of full-time firefighters for the district.

He said three of the six firefighters the district is planning to hire will be covered for three years by the grant.

“If we receive the grant it will compensate the full timers,” Hernandez said.

Hernandez said he and fire Chief Ron Stanish will make a presentation Tuesday to the county commissioners on ambulance purchases. The fire district is seeking two new ambulances.
