Eagle of the Cross awards to be presented to local teens

YOUNGSTOWN — More than 20 teens will receive the “Eagle of the Cross” Award from the Diocese of Youngstown, which is an award that has been given to juniors and seniors in the diocese since 1999.

The office of Youth and Young Adult Ministry of the Catholic Diocese of Youngstown named the 21 recipients of the award. Madeleine DiSalvatore, director of the office of Youth and Young Adult Ministry, said the award is the highest honor the diocese bestows on youth, and was created by the National Federation for Catholic Youth Ministry 25 years ago.

She said it is given each year to a group of extraordinary high school juniors and seniors who model the dedication, integrity, values and promise for Church and society.

Bishop David J. Bonnar will present the awards at a ceremony at 6 p.m. April 30 at St. Columba Cathedral in Youngstown. A reception will follow in the church hall.

Among the award recipients from Mahoning and Trumbull counties are:

•  Grace Burchfield — Mahoning County, St. Paul the Apostle, New Middletown

•   Cameron Ward — Mahoning County, St. Charles Borromeo, Boardman

•  Madelyn Fonagy — Trumbull County, St. Thomas the Apostle, Vienna

•   Kayla Haynie — Trumbull County, St. William, Champion

•   Thomas Pesa — Trumbull County, St. Patrick, Hubbard

•   Dayna Hughes — Cardinal Mooney High School, Youngstown, Holy Family Parish, Poland

•   Isabella Bancroft — Ursuline High School, Youngstown, St. Patrick, Hubbard

•   John McNally — Ursuline High School, Youngstown, St. Dominic, Youngstown

•   Ethan DeBernardi — John F. Kennedy Catholic School, Warren, St. Elizabeth Ann Seton, Warren
