County engineer plans work on historic bridge

WEATHERSFIELD — The Trumbull County Engineer’s Office is planning for the rehabilitation of the historic Ohltown viaduct bridge along Austintown Warren Road.

Engineer Randy Smith said the $3.9 million project is scheduled to begin construction in summer 2025 and be completed by fall 2026. The bridge is located west of Ohltown Road / Depot Street and spans the Meander Reservoir,

Officials said the bridge meets the National Register of Historic Places criteria as an example of a multi-span concrete filled arch bridge designed by a government entity,

Smith said the project proposes to rehabilitate the existing 1,000-foot, nine-span reinforced concrete arch bridge constructed in 1928 in order to improve the bridge’s general appraisal and condition rating.

The proposed rehabilitation will include new waterproofing and asphalt pavement, replacement of the existing road surface with engineered fill, concrete arch and spandrel wall patching / repairs, replacement of the heavily deteriorated parapet walls with similar style walls to meet current safety standards, and new catch basins and storm sewers.

There also are plans for the installation of an interpretive historic display documenting the historic bridge, design, the history of the Mahoning Valley Sanitary District and the village of Ohltown at the Ohltown Cemetery, which is on the east side and adjacent to the bridge.

Officials said during construction, Austintown Warren Road on the bridge site will be closed to vehicular traffic between Ohltown Road / Depot Street and the northern leg of Austintown Warren Road (west of the bridge) for a maximum of 180 consecutive days. The detour route for the closure will utilize Ohltown Road, North Turner Road, Mahoning Avenue, Lipkey Road and Yerke Young Road.

Smith said while the project will not result in any substantial impacts to environmental resources, the engineer’s office is seeking comments from the public.

For questions or comments concerning the project, contact Gary Shaffer by May 20 at the Trumbull County Engineer’s Office, 650 North River Road NW, Warren 44483 or call 330-675-2640.
