Six seek to succeed Saxton as Boardman superintendent

BOARDMAN — Board of Education president John W. Fryda said the district has received six candidate applications for superintendent to replace Timothy L. Saxton, who is stepping down July 31 after he decided not to renew a retire / rehire contract.

The interview process with the candidates is set to get underway April 15, Fryda said at Monday’s meeting at the high school.

Saxton, a 1984 Boardman High grad, attended Grove City College in Pennsylvania to study electrical engineering, but changed his major to math and education before graduating in 1988.

Beginning in 1999, he served two years as Boardman High’s assistant principal before becoming principal, a post he held for 11 years.

While serving as the district’s director of operations under former Superintendent Frank Lazzeri, Saxton was instrumental in helping to build a new sports field in 2014 at the high school as well as a new stadium a year later.

Also at the meeting, Fryda said a work session is scheduled for April 15 to discuss the possibility of replacing Center Intermediate School and Glenwood Junior High School with a single building on the high school property.

The board also honored high school junior Kaitlyn Greenaway for winning the state bowling championship.

“I began bowling 13 years ago,” Greenaway said. “My great-grandpa was a bowler. In second grade, I was in after-school bowling at Camelot Lanes.”

Nine years later, Greenaway’s name appeared in large capital letters on a maroon-and-white sign announcing her as the school’s 2024 state bowling champion.

Greenaway has maintained a 205 individual average, one of the highest marks for girls in Division I. In mid-January, she rolled a 705 three-game set, which set a record for the sectional preview tournament, held in Rootstown, for Divisions I and II.

“Kate as an individual is phenomenal in every way, as a competitor and team leader who gets the job done and keeps everyone in the right mindset,” Justine Cullen, the team’s head coach, said.

Also seeing the girls team’s season to a successful conclusion was the positive chemistry the competitors had with one another, Cullen added.

Also honored during the session was the boys bowling team, which won the All American Conference play in February and placed 12th in the state.

Other teams that were recognized for their high achievements were the Boardman Spartans swim team, along with students in the school’s junior varsity Quiz Bowl.
