Poland council discusses generator, vehicle lift

POLAND — Village Council held a discussion on generators and vehicle lifts during its Tuesday meeting, when Mike Krake from Generator Specialists answered questions on the former.

“We know nothing about generators,” council President Michael Thompson said.

Krake addressed the Poland Village Hall generator system. He told the council that generators are selected according to the load they need to handle. A proper generator will kick on when the power fails and will remain running for up to two minutes after the power returns.

“Our generators also kick on once a week to ensure they are ready when the need arises,” he told council.

He said a new generator will run off natural gas and new lines would have to be run at Village Hall.

“We try to get as close as possible to the meter,” he said.

After answering a few more questions, Thompson said the generator bids will be on the next council meeting agenda.

In another matter, police Chief Don Lambert said his department saved roughly $4,800 to $6,000 by letting one of his experienced officers and the maintenance department handle outfitting for the new police cruisers.

He also noted he would like to see a vehicle lift purchased as the maintenance department does a lot of work that would be safer on a lift.

Fiscal Officer Bob Canter said he has a quote of $3,995 for a lift and said the village’s insurance would cover such an item. The lift will appear at a future meeting as well.

Village solicitor Jay Macejko told council members they will need to figure out what to do about the new marijuana law.

“We need to consider recreational marijuana and our drug-free workplace policy,” he said. “We need to discuss it soon.”

To close the meeting, Mark Thompson was thanked for having volunteers clean the graffiti off Lovel Bridge, Tulip Tree Bridge and other locations in the park. Michael Thompson said the people who were up in arms about it returned to praise the efforts.
