Valley tuxedo stores close unexpectedly
NILES — Since Sunday, the American Commodore tuxedo store in the Eastwood Mall has not opened and has not been reachable, according to Cafaro Company spokesman Joe Bell.
“We’ve heard very little,” Bell said. “It’s a little perplexing. This came without any warning to us.”
Bell said the store has had issues in the past year with sudden closings because of illnesses in its staff.
The store was last open as recently as Saturday, but Bell said suddenly, and without warning, American Commodore was closed.
“The first thing we heard was whenever people started chatting on social media (Monday),” he said, “We did have an inkling something was wrong Sunday when the store did not open … We became more concerned when customers were saying that they can’t get in and then a note appeared on the door saying it was closed due to unforeseen circumstances.”
Bell said the mall has not been able to reach the store manager or representatives from Dapper & Dashing, the parent company that owns American Commodore.
“We haven’t seen anything that looks like a filing for bankruptcy or any kind of notice,” Bell said. “We’ve received no communications from them about this. It’s very disturbing.”
As of Tuesday evening, neither the American Commodore website nor the website for Dapper & Dashing have posted any type of statement or notice regarding the closing.
“Something interesting happened (on Monday),” Bell said. “We put our own statement on the door of the shop, expressing our own frustrations and sympathizing with the plight of some of these customers. As I was placing that on the door, a woman came up and explained that she was a bride-to-be. She is getting married on Saturday. The manager of the store had contacted her and met her there at 5:30 Monday afternoon. They opened the door and let her in and got all the tuxedos for their wedding. From what I’m told, there’s like one tuxedo left in the entire place.”
Bell said the Cafaro Company has not been made aware of the official status of the stores yet, but it is aware that several of its chains have been closing over the past few days.
Bell said that customers are urged to contact Men’s Wearhouse, the other formalwear store at the Eastwood Complex.
