CANFIELD — As part of the 27,000-square-foot expansion to its Canfield headquarters, Farmers National Bank plans for a new multimedia production center and rooftop meeting area to host employee and customer events.
The $9 million project also will include a new executive board room inside, while the exterior will pull in traditional character features of Canfield, including the two-story scale and color palette of the brick, double-hung windows and shingled roof of the adjacent Farmers Bank building to the north, according to details released Tuesday.
Construction is expected to begin in June and take 14 to 16 months to complete.
“Farmers has been central to the growth of our region since 1887. Now, as our company continues to grow, this expansion will greatly enhance our ability to be centrally located, taking advantage of the synergies of the talented people that have joined Farmers over the years,” Farmers President / CEO Kevin Helmick said. “A portion of our lending team, branch operations, marketing and executive offices will also be housed in the new addition.”
The first-floor multimedia room will be used by the bank’s marketing team for content creation, while the rooftop meeting area will have seating, picnic tables, a putting green and outdoor kitchen.
The addition will expand across Lisbon Street to the south of the existing campus on South Broad Street and along the western edge of Canfield Green. The southeast corner of the new building will be rounded, echoing other intersections around the Green, according to the bank.
“This rounded, glassy corner will highlight the addition’s new second floor executive board room, expressing a new character and identity for the expanding bank,” a release states.
Also undergoing renovations this year is the Canfield Main Office. The work includes a remodeled office.
Strollo Architects of Youngstown has been picked to design the addition. DeSalvo Construction of Hubbard will provide construction management services.
The project is being helped along by the Western Reserve Port Authority through a capital lease, which allows the port authority to own the project and lease it back to Farmers Bank for a period of time.
Doing so enables the bank to save money on building costs through a sales tax exemption available to port authorities in Ohio on construction-related materials. In this case, the bank stands to save an estimated $340,000 through the agreement.
Farmers National Banc Corp., the holding company for Farmers National Bank, has grown the bank’s financial acreage through two prominent mergers / acquisitions in the past two years.
In 2021, the company acquired Cortland Bancorp Inc., the holding company of Cortland Bank, in a cash and stock deal worth about $124 million.
The next year, the company made its largest acquisition to date when measured by banking assets by acquiring Pennsylvania-based Emclaire Financial Corp., the holding company for Farmers National Bank of Emlenton, Pa.
The cash and stock deal was worth about $105 million.
As it stands, the company, founded 1887, has more than $5 billion in banking assets with 65 banking locations in Ohio and Pennsylvania. The company also operates Farmers Trust Company with five trust offices and Farmers National Insurance, LLC.
