Suspect arrested in teen’s killing outside South Side party

YOUNGSTOWN — Detectives have made an arrest in the April 15 shooting death of a Valley Christian School student who was attending a party at Martha’s Boulevard Bar and Grille on Southern Boulevard.

According to a news release Saturday from Capt. Jason Simon, arrest warrants were issued for a 17-year-old boy in connection with the killing of Amya Monserrat.

“Detective Sergeants Michael Cox and Ryan Laatsch have been diligently and tirelessly investigating this case, along with support from numerous other detectives, crime scene personnel, the agency’s Special Victims Unit, Patrol Division, other law enforcement agencies, and countless community supporters who have provided information,” Simon said.

The charges against the youth, who is not named in the release, include felony murder and three counts of attempted murder, Simon said.

The juvenile was taken into custody, questioned and is being incarcerated at the county’s Juvenile Justice Center, Simon said.

“It is important to understand that the investigation into her murder continues,” Simon stated. “YPD is still investigating this senseless and untimely death, and additional charges and arrests are expected; therefore, we cannot reveal more details at this time. We are still seeking tips and information from the public to assist with the case.”

Monserrat was killed by the gunfire outside of Martha’s Boulevard Bar and Grille, while she was attending a party, police said. Monserrat, 15, was a sophomore and head cheerleader at the school. Police said Monserrat was not the intended target of the gunfire. She was “hit by a stray bullet,” Simon said.

Lt. Mohammad Awad of the detective division said previously the shooting involved “two groups of people shooting at each other. We don’t know how many shooters were involved in each group, but there were two parties to this. And they weren’t alone.”

He said the incident that led to the gunfire did not involve a traditional sort of fistfight. “But there was some type of conflict that has been brewing over the course of a couple of weeks,” he said. The people who were shooting at each other were involved in the conflict, he said.

The parties “shot back and forth at that party, location, restaurant, whatever you want to call that, and about 10:36 p.m., they came back and began shooting at each other,” Awad said

According to her obituary which appears in today’s newspaper, Monserrat was employed by her mother’s business, Bounce Bounce Palace. She had many hobbies, including doing hair, including her own, dancing and spending quality time with her five siblings.
