Man who fired gun at car with woman, child inside sentenced

YOUNGSTOWN — Tony A. Dabney Jr. 20, of Fairmount Avenue, pleaded guilty Tuesday to a reduced felonious-assault charge and was sentenced to two years in prison for firing a gun at the car of his girlfriend while a child was inside.

Dabney was indicted on two counts of felonious assault with a gun specification and other charges, but his plea in Mahoning County Common Pleas Court was to a lower-level attempted felonious assault and a gun specification and misdemeanor child endangering. Prosecutors and the defense jointly recommended that Judge John Durkin give Dabney two years in prison.

Dabney also was ordered to have no contact with the the woman or the child.

Boardman police said the incident took place April 17, 2022, at an apartment in the 100 block of Shields Road in Boardman in which Dabney was accused of firing a gun at the car of his girlfriend while a child was inside.

Police found a bullet shell casing in the street and collected it for evidence. They also later found a firearm in the apartment where Dabney had been trying to go. The bullets in the gun are consistent with the shell casing police found in the street, a Boardman police report states.

The victim said she took Dabney to the apartment on Shields that afternoon to get some shoes. When she got there, she realized it was the apartment of Dabney’s ex-girlfriend. The woman said she became upset and tried to leave without Dabney, but Dabney hit the front driver’s side car window with a silver handgun.

The woman put the car in reverse and started to drive away, but Dabney walked into the road and fired into the rear driver side door of her vehicle, the report states. She continued driving and left the area, she said. No one was injured. She discovered later that the car had been shot.

A witness saw Dabney fire the gun into the street and then walk toward an apartment, according to police.
