Fulfillment center to close
Things Remembered to shutter in January
NORTH JACKSON — Things Remembered is closing its North Jackson fulfillment center and Cleveland-area corporate headquarters, the personalized gift and keepsake retailer has informed the state.
The Richmond Heights-based company Wednesday filed what’s called a WARN (Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification Act) notice with the Ohio Department of Job and Family Services announcing the decision.
It will result in the “complete closure” of the headquarters in Richmond Heights and fulfillment center on South Bailey Road in North Jackson, according to the notice sent locally to Jackson Township trustees and Mahoning County commissioners.
“We expect that this action will be permanent and that all positions will be eliminated January 13, 2023, or within 14 days thereafter,” the notice states.
More than 100 employees in North Jackson and about 50 more in Richmond Heights will lose their jobs, according to the notice.
The reason behind the closure is unclear, as is whether Things Remembered’s parent company, Illinois-based Enesco, is offering job placement help for the impacted employees. It is also unknown when the company will cease taking orders or if existing orders will be affected.
Emails seeking comment were sent to representatives with Enesco and to the office in Richmond Heights.
The timing of the announcement is terrible due to the holidays, said Shea MacMillan, vice president, economic development for the Youngstown / Warren Regional Chamber.
“We will work to engage with the company to assist those employees who have been impacted. Fortunately, our region has a healthy base of distribution and fulfillment. We will ensure that those businesses that are seeking workers can connect with the impacted employees,” MacMillan said.
Things Remembered filed bankruptcy in February 2019, a maneuver done to facilitate the sale to Enesco, a retailer of giftware and home decor. Then, the company had about 400 stores and kiosks in the United States, including retail stores at the Eastwood Mall in Niles and Southern Park Mall in Boardman. Those local stores have long since closed.
When the sale was completed in March 2019, Enesco continued to operate Things Remembered online, direct mail and business-to-business retail, as well as a portfolio of stores under the Things Remembered brand.
The North Jackson fulfillment center was also among the assets acquired by Enesco. The building was built in 1997.
