Ex-deputy to be arraigned in slaying

BOARDMAN — Michael N. Bruno, 49, will be arraigned Tuesday morning in Mahoning County Area Court in Boardman on charges of aggravated murder and domestic violence in the 7:30 a.m. Saturday killing of an elderly man at 1894 Lealand Avenue.

Boardman police have not released a report on the shooting.

Meanwhile, Sheriff Jerry Greene on Monday confirmed that Bruno is a former deputy in the Mahoning County Sheriff’s Office, having served as deputy under former Sheriff Randall Wellington, before Greene became sheriff in 2013.

Bruno began as a reserve deputy in 1995 and became a full-time deputy in April 2000. He retired in November 2006.

The home where the killing took place is owned by Michael J. Bruno, 74, and Patricia M. Bruno, according to Mahoning County Auditor property records and other records.

Boardman police received a call that a shooting had occurred around 7:30 a.m. and responded to 1894 Lealand Ave., which is off Mathews Road, where they promptly arrested a suspect, Werth said.

The coroner’s office has not yet ruled cause of death, and the identity of the victim was being withheld until his family is notified.
