Poland council to hold vote to fill vacant seat

POLAND — Village council has rescheduled a special meeting for 8 p.m. Tuesday to elect a member to council to serve the remaining term of Anthony Lattanzio, who resigned.

Four village residents have applied for the job.

The meeting originally was set for 6 p.m., but due to scheduling conflicts was moved to 8 p.m. Council will begin its caucus session at 7 p.m. and will begin the regular meeting at 7:30 p.m. At 8 p.m., the regular meeting will be halted, if it is not concluded, so council can hear from individuals who applied by letter for the position.

After that, council will vote on Lattanzio’s replacement. The special meeting will continue until a replacement is elected.

The four Poland Village residents looking to fill the seat are:

• Martha M. Morgan, development director with Youngstown CityScape / Wick Neighbors Inc. since 2008. She had served as magistrate, Cleveland Municipal Court housing division, from 1998 to 2005. She was a personal balliff in that court’s housing division from 1996-1997; assistant director of law, Cleveland Law Department, 1991-1993; and associate director, New York City Department of General Services.

Morgan served four years on Poland council from 2016-2020.

“In the past I have worked with council to find common ground when we disagreed on what actions to take, and understand that sometimes it just takes a little negotiating to help reach a reasonable agreement. I am confident that I have the skills and experience to hold this position and to be an asset to the council and the community,” she wrote.

• Abbie L. Bosak (Mozzy), loan officer with Rapid Mortgage Company since 2017. She had served as hostess-busser at Pascarella’s Restaurant, 2010 to 2011; worked in the family business Brier Hill Pizza, 2009 to 2017; and was employed at Plato’s Closet secondhand clothing store, 2014-2017.

She’s a Poland High School 2013 graduate who studied art history at Youngstown State University in 2013-2014

“I intend to apply to fill the vacancy on Poland Village Council left by Councilman Anthony Lattanzio. In doing so I would complete the remainder of Mr. Lattanzio’s term and attempt to fill his many seats on various committees and village boards,” she wrote.

• Jeremy Demarco is a senior at Youngstown State University, with dual majors of computer science and political science, with a minor in mathematics. He’s been a photographer with Poland Schools since 2018.

While at YSU, Demarco served in student government, was chair of public Relations, elected to Academic Senate, became president of a fraternity, served as liaison for YSU’s international student organization, was advisor and media coordinator for the African Student Union, and served as an active tutor in both STEM and political science courses. He’s a 2019 graduate of Poland Seminary High School.

“I greatly enjoy being engaged with the community and helping to improve it however I can; whether that be the YSU community, my neighborhood, or, in this case, as part of the Poland Village Council,” he wrote.

• Ronald J. Rowe has been a social studies teacher with Poland Seminary High School since 1996. He’s a practicing attorney in spare time, and is an adjunct professor with Eastern Gateway Community College in the criminal justice program.

“In the past, I was a community representative on the board of the Western Reserve Joint Fire District. That position has shown to me the practical nature of local government and the constraints that officials must work within,” he wrote.
