FIRST FRIDAY SPEAKER: The First Friday Club of Greater Youngstown will host its monthly speaker series luncheon at 11:30 a.m. May 5 at Avion on the Water Banquet Center, 2177 W. WARREN RAZED: First Presbyterian Church in Warren will host “Warren Razed,” presented by The Trumbull County Historical Society, at 11:15 a.m. May 1. Lunch will be served at 11:15 a.m., and the presentation will begin 11:45 a.m. The project deals with urban renewal and changes that were made within the city of Warren that disproportionately impacted minority communities. UKRAINE FOOD FESTIVAL: SS. Mary and Joseph Parish in Warren will sponsor a Ukraine food festival 5 to 8 p.m. May 14 in the church social hall on Seneca Street NE. Local restaurateurs will donate their time and talent to serve at different stations set up around the hall. Admission tickets are $20 each for adults and $10 for children age 10 and under. FIREWORKS EVENT: St. Demetrios Greek Orthodox Church, 429 High St. NE, Warren, will celebrate the Resurrection of Christ with a fireworks display taking place at 12:01 a.m. Sunday and lasting 10-12 minutes. The public is welcome to celebrate the service of the Resurrection with the church’s parishioners and enjoy the fireworks celebration, which will be visible in the entire downtown Warren area.

VICTIMS OF ABUSE: Bishoip David Bonnar of the Diocese of Youngstown will preside over a Holy Hour with Benediction for victims of child abuse at 1 p.m. Sunday at St. Columba Cathedral. April is National Child Abuse Prevention Month, and Sunday is also the Octave of Easter and Divine Mercy Sunday.

This year marks the 20th anniversary of the Charter for the Protection of Children and Young People, written by the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops to address child sexual abuse in the church in the United States.

HERE COMES THE SON: Christ Episcopal Church, 2627 Atlantic St. NE, Warren, will host the “Here Comes the Son” annual Beatles Mass at 5 p.m. April 30. The event is a full liturgy with Eucharist. A chicken wing challenge will be at 6 p.m.

CONCERT SET: General Assembly Church of God, 2021 E. River Road, Newton Falls, will host the Singing Weavers in concert at 11 a.m. May 8.

MOTHER’S SUNDAY: Third Christian Church, 241 First St., Warren, will host Mother’s Day Sunday May 8 sponsored by the Christian Men’s Fellowship. Guest speaker is the Rev. Neil Heller, associate minister of New Jerusalem Fellowship Church.

EAGLE OF THE CROSS: The Office of Youth and Young Adult Ministry of the Catholic Diocese of Youngstown will recognize 29 recipients of the 2022 Eagle of the Cross Award.

The award is presented to teens in the six counties of the Diocese of Youngstown who model Christian discipleship and exemplify the qualities of moral integrity, prayer, good works and Christian leadership in their school and parish communities.

The Eagle of the Cross, created by the National Federation for Catholic Youth Ministry and introduced to the diocese in 1999, is given each year to a group of extraordinary high school upperclassmen who model the dedication, integrity, values and promise for Church and society.

Bishop David Bonnar of the Diocese of Youngstown will present the awards at a ceremony at 6:30 p.m. May 2 at St. Columba Cathedral in Youngstown. The ceremony will include evening prayer with Bonnar presiding. Light refreshments will follow in the church hall.

RENEWAL TRIO CONCERT: Wickliffe Presbyterian Church, 45 Idlewood Road, Austintown, will host the Renewal Trio in concert 6 p.m. Sunday for Palm Sunday. The group will perform various songs. Face masks are required.

GUEST SPEAKERS: McKinley Community Church, 1524 Elm Road NE, Warren, will host Mark and Cheryl Kholos from Shofar Shalom Ministries at 6 p.m. Sunday. Those who attend will experience and taste the elements of a Passover Seder as they rediscover the Jewish roots of the Christian faith. Mark and Cheryl founded this ministry in 1995 to help people understand and appreciate the Passover from a Messianic Jewish perspective. A Messianic Jew is one who believes in the death and resurrection that offers salvation through The Lord Jesus Christ.

Using music, visuals, scriptures and personal experiences, they educate on how Christian roots are related to Israel being set free from slavery in ancient Egypt.

EASTER EVENT: Redeemer Lutheran Church, 2305 S. Canfield-Niles Road, Austintown, will host a children’s friendly Easter event for kids ages 3 to 12 at 11 a.m. today. The butterfly theme for this year’s free event is focused on New Life in Jesus. The event will be indoors. There will be games, a cookie decorating craft and candy for the children.

HOLY WEEK: St. Columba Cathedral in Youngstown will host Holy Week events.

• Palm Sunday of the Passion of the Lord Mass will be celebrated at 4 p.m. today and 10:30 a.m. and 4 p.m. Sunday. Palms will be blessed and distributed at each Mass.

• Mass of Holy Chrism at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday. Included in the Chrism Mass is the annual renewal of the diocesan priests of their commitment to priestly service.

• The Evening Mass of the Lord’s Supper will be celebrated 5:30 p.m. Thursday with the cathedral to remain open until 7:30 p.m. for adoration of the Blessed Sacrament.

• On Good Friday, the Passion of the Lord and Veneration of the Cross Service will be at 3 p.m.

• Blessing of the Easter food will take place 3 p.m. April 16 with the Easter Vigil starting 8 p.m. Additional Masses will be 10:30 a.m. and 12:30 p.m. April 17.

EASTER SERVICES: Harvest Point Church, 2121 Salt Springs Road, Lordstown, will conduct a sunrise service 7:30 a.m. April 17 and a traditional Easter service 10 a.m. April 17.

INTERFAITH EVENT: The Niles Interfaith Committee will host a brunch 1 p.m. April 24 at Ciminero’s Banquet Center, Niles, where scholarships will be presented to local students. The event also will have a speaker. Tickets are $20 per person available until Monday at any Niles church or by calling Georgeanne at 330-652-0034 or Jean at 330-652-7281. The event, which has been held for more than 50 years, has not been held since 2019 because of the pandemic.

Speaker is the Rev. Ron Blakeman, senior pastor of Mineral Ridge Church of Christ since 2014. Blakeman also serves as the chaplain for the Weathersfield Fire Department.

SACRED ASSEMBLY: Cortland Trinity Baptist Church, 2576 McCleary Jacoby Road, Bazetta, will host a “Sacred Assembly” Palm Sunday service at 6 p.m. Sunday.

EGGSTRAVAGANZA: Life Church in Leavittsburg will host a community egg hunt 10:30 a.m. April 16 at the Leavittsburg football fields on West Market Street. The event is for toddlers to fifth grade. Register at www.lcogoh.com.

EASTER CELEBRATION: Central Baptist Church, 1301 North Road, Niles, will host an Easter celebration 1 to 3 p.m. April 16 with an egg hunt for children age 12 and younger.

MAUNDY THURSDAY: Unity Spiritual Centre, 1126 Naylor Lloyd Road, Liberty, will host a Maundy Thursday service 7 p.m. Thursday.

• Grace United Methodist Church, 1725 Drexel NW, Warren, will host a Maundy Thursday service 7 p.m. Thursday. The service will be preceded by a discussion of the meaning and sampling of the elements of a Seder (Passover) meal. Palm Sunday service is 11 a.m. Sunday.

SAUCE AND SONG: St. Patrick Parish on Oak Hill Avenue in Youngstown has resumed its spaghetti dinner fundraiser with the first event to be noon to 3 p.m. Sunday in the parish social hall. Dinners for adults and children older than 10 will cost $10, while meals for children under 10 are available for $5.

The spaghetti dinner will be followed by a concert featuring Tyler Guerrieri and James McClellan, which will be 1:30 to 2:15 p.m. in the church. Free-will offerings are encouraged. For further information, contact the parish office at 330-743-1109.

JEHOVAH’S WITNESSES RESUME MEETINGS: After two years of virtual meetings only, all congregations of Jehovah’s Witnesses will resume in-person meetings effective Friday. This includes not only the more than 25 congregations in the local area, but also all 120,000 congregations worldwide, barring any local government restrictions. There is a new worldwide transition back to in-person meetings and the new hybrid format, including a virtual component.

For most of the last two years, buildings for worship have remained closed globally due to the risks associated with meeting in person. Jehovah’s Witnesses in the U.S. also suspended their public ministry on March 20, 2020.

The move back to in-person meetings coincides with two global events being held in all 120,000 congregations of Jehovah’s Witnesses. The first is a special lecture scheduled in most congregations for April 10, titled: “Where Can You Find Real Hope?” Additionally, the annual commemoration of the death of Jesus Christ will be on April 15, the very day he sacrificed his life 1,989 years ago. Both of these gatherings will be in person at local Kingdom Halls with live speakers.

LUTHERAN-CATHOLIC COVENANT: The Lutheran-Catholic Covenant Commission will host an ecumenical evening prayer celebrating the Lutheran Catholic Covenant at 6 p.m. Sunday at St. Columba Cathedral in downtown Youngstown. Bishop David Bonnar of the Diocese of Youngstown will preside, and Bishop Laura Barbins (Northeastern Ohio Synod of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America) will preach at the prayerful recommitment to the Covenant between the two faiths. The Covenant, signed Oct. 29, 2000, between Youngstown Diocese Bishop Thomas Tobin and Lutheran Bishop Marcus Miller, confesses the faith shared by Lutherans and Catholics and dedicates them to prayer, study and action for Christian unity.

GUEST SPEAKER: Corner House Christian Church, 6954 Chestnut Ridge Road, Hubbard, will host a 9:40 a.m. parking lot service and a 10:30 a.m. sanctuary service Sunday with guest speaker from Christ Reaching Asia Mission Worldwide. After the services, a light lunch will be offered and guests can hear from speakers of local missions such as the Rescue Mission of the Mahoning Valley, Big Reach and Elkhorn Valley Christian Service Camp.

INSTALLATION: Elim Christian Center, 3214 Ridge Road, Warren, will host the installation of pastor-elect Aruthenia Simmons at 7 p.m. Friday. The ordination and installation service will be officiated by Bishop Troy Anthony Bronner of Elim Christian Fellowship, Buffalo, New York.
