Man charged in Thursday murder has misdemeanor police record

YOUNGSTOWN — Marquez Thomas, 24, who is in the Mahoning County jail awaiting a Monday arraignment in Youngstown Municipal Court on aggravated murder and three counts of felonious assault, does not have an extensive local criminal record.

Police arrested Thomas after serving search warrants Thursday on Tyrell Avenue, where the shootings took place, and a Glenellen Avenue residence, both on the West Side.

Thomas is accused of killing Joseph Addison, 42, at an apartment building in the 2400 block of Tyrell and injuring men 34 and 21, and a woman, 26. All three survived. The shootings took place about 4:30 a.m. Thursday.

Thursday’s killing brought the city’s homicide total for 2021 to 30, two more than in 2020.

According to Youngstown Municipal Court records, Thomas has two criminal cases and one traffic case on file since 2018. They are a 2018 minor-misdemeanor drug-possession conviction and a misdemeanor disorderly conduct conviction. He also was convicted of a misdemeanor unsafe-vehicle offense in May 2021 in Youngstown Municipal Court.

Thomas had an address in the 400 block of North Glenellen Avenue in Youngstown in March when he was cited for driving 88 mph in a 65-mph zone on Interstate 680. That case was handled in Mahoning County Area Court in Boardman. He was convicted of a headlights violation in October 2020 that occurred in Austintown.

He was charged with five offenses in August 2020 in Campbell Municipal Court — improperly handling firearms in a motor vehicle, possession of drugs and drug paraphernalia, speeding and having no driver’s license.

He pleaded guilty to a misdemeanor weapons offense and was sentenced to three days in jail.
