Another gun incident at South Side Popeyes

YOUNGSTOWN — For the second day in a row, an incident involving a gun took place at the Popeyes Restaurant, 40 W. Midlothian Blvd. on the South Side.

Police were called to the restaurant 4:18 p.m. Monday for a fight with a gun. They were told Rachid Yamany, 33, of Brownlee Avenue, came to the restaurant to speak with his ex-girlfriend, who works there; and they have a child together.

Yamany asked the woman if she was sleeping with another man, who was at the restaurant, and she said no. But police were told Yamany struck the woman in the face.

Yamany then struck the man in the back of the head from behind with something hard, then struck him two more times in the head. The male victim realized it was a gun all three times.

Another man took the gun off of Yamany, who then pulled out a box cutter, police said. He then took the gun back and left the restaurant, police said.

The attack took place in front of employees and customers, police were told.

Police later located Yamany at a home on Loveland Avenue. He was trying to hide his car in a garage. Police took him into custody. The box cutter was located in Yamany’s clothing, and a handgun was found in the car’s glove box.

Youngstown Municipal Court records, however, do not show any new charge for Yamany.

At 8:33 p.m Sunday, police were called to the same restaurant for a woman with a firearm fighting with employees. The woman later was taken to the Mahoning County jail on possible misdemeanor charges, but she does not have any new charges listed in Youngstown Municipal Court.

When officers arrived, they found the woman in a car in the drive-thru lane. When asked if she had a gun, she told police it was in a holster on the seat of her car. Police took the woman into custody and found the gun on the seat.

An employee told police the woman came through the drive-thru and complained her biscuits were burned, but she had no receipt to prove she bought them there. The woman got angry and the employee went outside to record the woman on his cellphone.

But the woman knocked his cellphone out of his hand, damaging it. The employee said the woman kept her gun in its holster.
