Six vie as write-ins for Youngstown mayor

YOUNGSTOWN — Six candidates filed to run as write-ins for Youngstown mayor, including two who tried before and garnered five total votes between them.

Also filing as a write-in was Tayana C. Smith of East Boston Avenue, who had turned in petitions to run as an independent candidate and then withdrew them.

Cecil B. Monroe of Maranatha Court and Calvin Hill of Lilburne Drive, who’ve run for mayor before as write-ins, filed again as write-ins.

Monroe ran as a write-in in the 2013 mayoral election and received three votes. He ran as an independent in 2017, and got 61 votes, 0.54 of a percent of the total vote that year.

Hill ran as a write-in four years ago and got two votes.

The other write-in candidates for Youngstown mayor are Amber Leigh White of North Brockway Avenue, Lynette Wesley of Hunter Avenue and Claudette R. Moore of Oxford Street.

White’s husband, John of North Belle Vista Avenue, had filed as an independent, but was disqualified for two reasons — he wasn’t eligible to be a candidate under the Youngstown city charter for not being an elector for five years, and he voted in the Democratic primary after filing as an independent.

Write-in candidates had until 4 p.m. Monday to file forms with the Mahoning County Board of Elections to seek offices. Only those who turned in paperwork by the deadline are eligible to be write-in candidates. Any other names on the write-in line are not counted under state law.

Those whose names will appear on the ballot for Youngstown mayor are incumbent Democrat Jamael Tito Brown, seeking his second four-year term, as well as Republican Tracey Winbush and Richard V. Hill, an independent.

Two write-in candidates filed for Struthers treasurer, a seat that will be vacant with incumbent Democrat Robert D. Carcelli III not seeking re-election and no one turning in petitions to get their names on the ballot.

The two write-ins are Mark T. Brenner of Como Street and Erika N. Rudzik of Deer Creek Drive.

Other write-in candidates are:

∫ Joseph M. Amabeli of Bennington Drive for a seat on Sebring Village Council. Only three candidates were running for four seats so Amabeli is guaranteed to be elected.

∫ Sherry L. Augustein of Church Street for a seat on the Beloit Village Council. Four council seats are open on the Nov. 2 ballot with only one candidate filing before Augustein, an incumbent, decided to run as a write-in.

∫ James J. Clinton of Washington Street and Ryan A. McNicholas of West Wood Street for seats on the Lowellville Village Council. Three candidates previously filed for the four seats on council leaving one opening.

∫ Seth Michael Ross of Robinwood Drive filed for a seat on the village council of New Middletown. No one turned in petitions by the deadline to get their names on the ballot for any of the four seats. Ross, who is an incumbent, is the only write-in candidate for a council position in the village.
