Man indicted in Dec. killing

YOUNGSTOWN — A Mahoning County grand jury has indicted Gregory D. Richardson II, 36, in the Dec. 22, 2020, shooting death of Jolanda Murry, 27, as she was riding in a car on Halleck Street on the North Side.

Richardson is indicted on aggravated murder with three gun specifications that could add additional prison time to his sentence if convicted.

He is also indicted on two counts of being a felon in possession of a firearm and one of criminal damaging or endangering.

Police said the shooting happened about 5:30 a.m. between Logan Avenue and Elm Streets. She died several days later at St. Elizabeth Youngstown Hospital.

Just after the shooting, police said a suspect whose name was not being released had been arrested on unrelated charges, and police planned to charge him with the homicide.

Also indicted was Nicholas Roman, 24, of Streetsboro, on charges of attempted murder, felonious assault, failure to stop after an accident and obstructing official business.

Police said Roman drove off from a traffic stop on state Route 45 in Jackson Township on Sept. 30, 2020, and grabbed the arm of North Jackson police officer Tyler Vasco, dragging him for nearly a mile at high speed.

Eventually the officer let go and fell to the road just south of Route 45 and Blatt Road. Vasco suffered road rash, cuts and bruises but no broken bones or serious injuries. He was released after being checked at a hospital.

Police later arrested Roman at a home in Ravenna.

Starting at $3.23/week.
