Champion leads Valley schools in COVID-19 infections

The Champion Local School District for the second week has the highest number of reported school coronavirus cases in the Mahoning Valley, according to the Ohio Department of Health.

Champion schools reported six new cases of students contracting the virus and one new case of a teacher or staff member with it.

The Ohio schools report reflects new and cumulative COVID-19 cases reported to schools by parents / guardians and staff. The most recent reports are from the previous Monday through Sunday.

Over a two-week period, the Champion district has had a total of 13 students and two staff members reporting the virus.

In the new report, Poland Local Schools in Mahoning County reported two students with the virus and one staff member during this weekly reporting period.

Brookfield, Liberty and McDonald school districts each reported one student case in Trumbull County. McDonald and Southington each reported new cases among staff members.

In Mahoning County, Ursuline High School reported one student case. Akiva Academy reported one case of a staff member contracting the virus.

In Columbiana County, only Beaver schools reported a student case and United Local reported one case among staff members.

Schools are required to report cases to their assigned local health department, which then reports to the Ohio Department of Health.

These reports should not be interpreted as an indicator that a school district or school isn’t following proper procedures, the state said. The reports can be a reflection of the overall situation in the broader community.
