COVID-19 cases in Valley increase in nursing homes

ODH confirms spikes in two Trumbull County facilities

The newest numbers from Ohio Department of Health confirm that the Community Skilled Health Care Center on Mahoning Avenue in Warren experienced a significant spike in coronavirus cases.

The ODH listing said the 125-bed facility had 21 cases this week after having none the week before that or at any other time since the virus began.

The center at the corner of Mahoning Avenue and North Street Northwest has 16 patient cases and five staff cases.

Meanwhile, the numbers remained essentially the same at Mahoning and Columbiana county long-term care facilities this week with two in Mahoning having at least three cases and three in Columbiana County having that many.

As a state, the number of patient cases this week in Ohio nursing homes and assisted-living facilities rose — from 803 to 899. Staff cases rose from 489 to 513.

TRUMBULL

Community Skilled’s administrator, Roger Reynolds, has said the outbreak was discovered through testing after a staff member came down with the virus, resulting in testing of all staff members. The results mostly came back on Sunday.

He said all of the patients and staff members who tested positive for the virus were in one section of the facility and are being kept in a separate area from the rest of the patients.

Meanwhile, a Mineral Ridge nursing home, Continuing Healthcare at the Ridge, also saw a big jump this week, reporting 20 patient cases and one staff case. Continuing Healthcare at the Ridge has been on the list in recent months and has had a total of 48 patient cases and 18 staff cases since April 15.

Those two facilities make up nearly all of the cases in Trumbull County.

Only three Trumbull County coronavirus cases at longterm care facilities were reported last week, according to ODH data, which is reported each week on the ODH coronavirus website.

MAHONING

Mahoning County reported an increase of three nursing home deaths this week — from 174 last week to 177 this week.

Trumbull saw an increase of two deaths this week — from 62 last week to 64 this week. Columbiana County also saw an increase of two nursing home deaths — from 32 last week to 34 this week.

Mahoning County continues to have the fourth-highest number of nursing home deaths in the state and Trumbull continues to have the eighth-most.

Trumbull Correctional Institution in Leavittsburg saw a small increase this week in coronavirus cases, rising from 16 last week to 17 this week. The Northeast Ohio Correctional Center on Hubbard Road in Youngstown remained at two cases this week. It had 12 cases two weeks ago.

The biggest Ohio prison hot spot is the Madison Correctional Institution in London, just west of Columbus, where currently 220 inmate cases of the virus have been recorded.
