County prosecutor gets case against village police chief

YOUNGSTOWN — The Ohio Bureau of Criminal Investigation turned over an investigative file in mid-March to the Mahoning County Prosecutor’s office regarding criminal allegations against former New Middletown police Chief Vincent D’Egidio.

“It’s a voluminous file, and we are still reviewing it,” county Prosecutor Paul Gains said Thursday. “COVID has really put a damper on some of our investigations.”

New Middletown Mayor Harry Kale wrote a letter in November 2019 to Mahoning County Sheriff Jerry Greene stating that D’Egidio looked at pornographic websites. Images and a video of him performing a sex act on another person were found on a work computer, Kale stated.

D’Egidio resigned in early November amid an investigation by the sheriff’s office into the allegations. Greene at the time said members of his human trafficking task force were assigned to the case.

Greene said the human trafficking task force was involved because “the age of the person in the video with the chief” was not known.

At some point, the Ohio Bureau of Criminal Investigation became involved in the investigation. When Greene was asked about the case this week, he referred a reporter to BCI.

Steve Irwin, BCI spokesman, said BCI’s investigation had been turned over to the Mahoning County Prosecutor’s Office “for their review.”

Irwin did not provide the date when the file was turned over to the county prosecutor, but Gains said it was around March 16.
