State reports spike in cases of COVID at Valley nursing homes

Two more Mahoning County nursing homes were added Wednesday to the state’s list of facilities with current COVID-19 cases, and the number of cases has ballooned at a Youngstown facility.

Mahoning facilities listed for the first time on the Ohio Department of Health web site are Crandall Medical Center nursing home in Sebring with 10 patients and zero staff having the virus, and Shepherd of the Valley Poland nursing home with zero patients and one staff on the list.

The ODH has also added two new categories to the list this week, providing the public with the total number of patient and staff cases each facility has had since the beginning of cases.

Windsor House Omni Manor in Youngstown saw a large spike this week in cases. It had five patients and one staff member last week, but that rose to 31 patients and 12 staff members this week.

Today, a “strike team” consisting of representatives from the ODH, Youngstown Health Department and other agencies will have a conference call with Omni Manor on Vestal Road on the city’s West Side to offer guidance on best ways to contain the outbreak, Youngstown Health Commissioner Erin Bishop told The Vindicator on Monday.

St. Mary Alzheimer’s Center near Columbiana has had one of the largest outbreaks of the virus in the area since the virus first infected nursing homes, with a total of 60 patients and 34 staff. Its newest numbers are a mixed bag: It currently has 28 patients with the virus and 16 staff. It had 11 infected patients and 25 infected staff at the time of last week’s list.

This week, Trumbull County has five facilities on the list, one more than last week. The new facility on the list is Shepherd of the Valley in Niles.

Columbiana County has two on the list, one more than last week. The new one is Circle of Care nursing home in Salem.
