2 injured in shooting on South Side on Christmas evening

YOUNGSTOWN — Two people were shot, and two juveniles at a home on Saranac Avenue on the North Side were arrested in a shooting on Christmas evening on East Florida Avenue, according to a Youngstown police report.

The gunfire was reported at 7:45 p.m. When police arrived, they found multiple spent rifle and handgun bullet shell casings, as well as broken glass in the middle of East Florida Avenue on the South Side, the report states.

While officers were there, they were advised that two gunshot victims had come to St. Elizabeth Youngstown Hospital in relation to the shootings on East Florida Avenue. It is not clear how badly injured the victims are.

The police department crime lab and detectives went to the scene to investigate, the report states.

An officer went to Saranac Avenue to assist other officers, including detectives and crime-scene personnel, the report states.

Officers knocked on the door on Saranac and spoke with the homeowner, who said two juveniles were upstairs. He had the juveniles come downstairs, and officers detained them in handcuffs and escorted them to the back of two police cruisers.

The man who answered the door gave police consent to search the property for evidence, and officers went upstairs to find a handgun under a mattress in a bedroom and a loaded bullet magazine between cushions on a couch, the report states.

An officer then walked out of the house and found a black Nike bag stuffed into the trash can buried in boxes and trash in an alley near the side door of the house, the report states.

Upon opening the backpack, the officer found a “broken down rifle and two bullet magazines,” which were taken into evidence, the report states.

The two juveniles were then taken to the Youngstown Police Department for questioning by detectives and were arrested, police said.
