200 virus cases at nursing homes

State revises COVID-19 list, reports counties gave too much data to verify

COLUMBUS — Problems continue with the Ohio Department of Health’s listing of Ohio nursing homes and assisted living facilities with COVID-19 cases.

The ODH reported on Friday that 19 Mahoning Valley care facilities have 200 COVID-19 cases — 128 patients and 72 staff — even though the site on Thursday did not list any Mahoning, Trumbull or Columbiana counties as having any active cases.

Thursday morning’s list only included 781 of the 1,676 Ohio cases listed Friday.

Melanie Amato, ODH press secretary, said Friday the reason is because the counties reported too much data, so the ODH did not include these until ODH could verify the numbers.

Some of the information the ODH posted Wednesday and Thursday was apparently correct. The ODH did not change the numbers for the Ohman Family Living at Briar nursing home in Middlefield that were reported earlier. It still has 44 patients and 14 staff members with the virus.

The Altercare of Alliance nursing home has the highest number of area infections with 49 patients and 25 staff members having the virus. The Canton Repository newspaper cited data from the company in saying the facility also has had 15 deaths.

The ODH took down the nursing homes list shortly after it posted it the first time April 17 because of errors. When it reappeared Wednesday, it had been reformatted and included only current cases instead of all cases dating back to the beginning.

The current list shows that Mahoning County went from having 10 facilities on the first list to 14 now.

Thursday’s list said there were 558 patients and 223 staff with the virus in Ohio, but the new list says there are 1,199 infected patients and 477 staff. The list does not say how many people have died at the facilities.

Among the 14 Mahoning County facilities, 93 of the cases involve patients and 65 involve staff.

The data shows that the St. Mary’s Alzheimer’s Center nursing home near Columbiana has the largest number of staff members infected at 25 and also has the most total infections in Mahoning County at 36.

The list indicates that Masternick Memorial nursing home in New Middletown has the most current COVID-19 patients with 15. O’Brien Memorial Nursing Home in Masury has the most cases in Trumbull County at 16.
