UPDATE 2 – Thur. 12:15 p.m.: One dead in officer-involved shooting this morning on Youngstown South Side

YOUNGSTOWN – Youngstown Police were involved in a fatal shooting on the city’s South Side this morning, according to investigators. No officers were injured, but a person, who has not yet been identified, is dead.

The Ohio Bureau of Criminal Investigation confirmed moments ago that Youngstown Police Department requested the agency’s assistance in investigating a fatal officer-involved shooting on Helena Avenue.

No officers were injured, said Dominic Binkley, deputy press secretary for Ohio BCI and Attorney General Dave Yost. The investigation is in its preliminary stages, and BCI has not released any further information at this time.

The Vindicator has confirmed a man who lists the 4312 Helena Ave. address as his home is incarcerated in Mahoning County Jail.

A large contingent of officers gathered at a South Side home this morning. The home is now taped off with crime scene tape.

In addition to several police detectives, officers and personnel with the Mahoning County coroner’s office, there is an internal affairs officer at the scene. Mayor Jamael Tito Brown and police Chief Carl Davis also were on scene earlier today.
