Four newly reported COVID-19 deaths today in area

Four more COVID-19 deaths were reported in the Mahoning Valley today — two each in Mahoning and Columbiana counties.

There were no deaths reported today in Trumbull County.

Overall, there have been 196 COVID-19 deaths in the Valley — 124 in Mahoning, 35 in Trumbull and 37 in Columbiana counties.

There are 1,357 COVID-19 deaths in the state as of today, up from 1,341 Sunday, according to the Ohio Department of Health’s daily 2 p.m. update today.

There have been 24,777 confirmed cases of the virus in Ohio today, up from 24,081 Sunday.

In Mahoning County, there have been 1,144 cases as of today, up from 1,119 Sunday; in Trumbull, 408 confirmed cases as of today, up from 406 Sunday; and in Columbiana County, there have been 336 cases as of today, up from 325 a day earlier.

Statewide, 4,413 people have been hospitalized as of today because of the virus, up from 4,351 Sunday. Of those, there are 1,217 people in intensive-care units, up from 1,205 Sunday.

Last week Gov. Mike DeWine said he’d have an announcement today about childcare services. But DeWine said today he wasn’t prepared to make an announcement yet. He said the decision is too important to make in haste.

Meanwhile, in-store consumer, retail and some businesses will be allowed to reopen Tuesday. The state last week permitted manufacturing, distribution, construction and general offices to reopen.

Also, restaurants and bars will be allowed to reopen for inside services May 21 with outdoor dining beginning Friday. Hair and nail salons, tanning facilities and day spas can also reopen Friday.
