Unvaccinated people cited for rise in cases

With COVID-19 cases remaining high, Dr. Bruce Vanderhoff, Ohio Department of Health’s chief medical officer, again urged people to get vaccinated. Case numbers stay above 21-day average

The Ohio Department of Health reported 495 new COVID-19 cases Sunday, bringing the state total to 1,122,104 since the pandemic began. The additional case numbers again are higher than the 21-day average for the state. The ODH reported an additional 18 deaths Friday, bringing the total to 20,467. The state is updating the total number of deaths only after death certificates have been processed, usually on Tuesdays and Fridays. Vaccinations increase slightly within Valley

Saturday’s data from the Ohio Department of Health showed slightly more Mahoning Valley residents began the vaccination process within the previous 24 hours than in the 24 hours before Friday’s report. In Trumbull County, 136 people received their first shot, compared to the previous day’s 125, finally bumping the county over 45 percent of the population at least partially vaccinated. Valley sees explosion in weekly COVID-19 cases

The weekly rate of change in new cases in the Mahoning Valley on Friday was more than five times that of the previous week. According to Ohio Department of Health data from July 16, the week saw an increase of 20, 23, and 25 cases in Columbiana, Trumbull and Mahoning counties, respectively. On Friday, Trumbull and Columbiana counties each showed a weekly increase of 104 cases and Mahoning showed an increase of 179 cases from the previous week.
