The weekly rate of change in new cases in the Mahoning Valley on Friday was more than five times that of the previous week.

According to Ohio Department of Health data from July 16, the week saw an increase of 20, 23, and 25 cases in Columbiana, Trumbull and Mahoning counties, respectively.

On Friday, Trumbull and Columbiana counties each showed a weekly increase of 104 cases and Mahoning showed an increase of 179 cases from the previous week. Those numbers are similar to the weekly change reported Thursday.

Statewide, there was an increase of 4,670 weekly cases reported Friday compared to 2,585 weekly cases reported July 16.

Trumbull County now has a total of 16,744 reported cases and 491 deaths. Mahoning has 22,663 reported cases and 612 deaths and Columbiana has 9,182 cases and 236 deaths. The numbers of new cases in Columbiana and Mahoning Counties were similar to those reported Thursday. Trumbull County saw an increase of only five cases Friday to the previous day’s 11 cases.

The state saw 872 new cases Friday — 50 more than Thursday — bringing the total to 1,120,992.

At the same time, new vaccinations have slowed to a crawl.

Vaccination rates in Trumbull, Mahoning and Columbiana counties remain lower than the state as a whole, which Friday was still hovering under half of the population at 48.75 percent, or 5,698,421 individuals having started the vaccination process.

In Trumbull County, 44.99 percent of the population had begun the vaccination process as of Friday, up just .06 percent from Thursday’s report, with 125 people receiving their first shot in the previous 24 hours.

In Mahoning, 47.31 percent of the population has at least begun the vaccination process, with 150 in the last 24 hours. Only 45 people began getting vaccinated in the last 24 hours in Columbiana, where 38.07 percent of the population has started the process.

The Trumbull County health district, which on Thursday issued a warning about the more contagious delta variant, which is becoming more prevalent throughout the country and the state, continues to provide all three vaccines through its clinic in the Eastwood Mall every Tuesday and Thursday from 5 to 7 p.m. and the first and third Saturdays in August from 1 to 3 p.m.

The Warren City Health District will offer the Moderna vaccine in clinics from 9 to 11 a.m. and 1 to 3 p.m. on Aug. 11, 18 and 25 on the third floor of 258 E. Market St.

In a back-to-school event from noon to 5 p.m. on Aug. 22, the city will offer the vaccine at Perkins Park.

Mahoning County Public Health is scheduling appointments for vaccinations at their office, where walk-ins are also welcomed, according to the website. The address is 50 Westchester Drive, Austintown, OH 44515. More information is available online at www.mahoninghealth.org.

MCPH is also hosting two Johnson & Johnson clinics 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. July 29, and 8:30 a.m. to noon and 1 to 3:30 p.m. Aug. 5.

MCPH’s Moderna clinics are 8:30 to 11:30 a.m. Aug. 12, 19 and 26.
