COIN CLUB: The Wheatland Mercer County Coin Club will hold its monthly meeting at 7 p.m. Wednesday in the Wheatland Community Center, formally called the Wheatland Borough Building, 71 Broadway Ave., in the Wheatland neighborhood of Hermitage.
All are invited, and there is light food and beverages. Monthly meetings include a special raffle, main raffle, coin auction, door prizes, birthday prizes and much more.
This month’s special raffle is a 1999 tenth-ounce gold piece in uncirculated condition. There are 20 coins in the regular raffle.
Every member will be awarded one free coin and may participate in the raffles. More information is available on the club’s website.
GENEALOGY SOCIETY TO MEET: The Mahoning County Chapter of the Ohio Genealogical Society will meet at 7 p.m. Wednesday in the Ministry Building of St. Charles Church. The group will hold their annual show and tell, where members are asked to bring a family artifact and share about its significance relating to their ancestors and history.
The public is welcome. Visitors are encouraged to bring an item to share.

PUMPKIN GROWING: The Ohio Valley Giant Pumpkin Growers Club is offering its annual Beginners Giant Pumpkin Growers seminar 9:30 a.m. to noon Saturday at Parks Garden Center in Canfield. The free seminar will be led by Tim Parks, who will discuss the arts and sciences of growing giant pumpkins. Club members will be on hand to help get you started on your journey to becoming a grower. ALZHEIMER NETWORK MEETING: The Alzheimer Network support group will meet at 10 a.m. on Friday at the Canfield Christian Church, 123 S. Broad St.
Due to winter weather, dangerous road conditions and a recently announced flu variant, the group is initiating a “call-in reservation policy” for those who wish to attend one of the regularly announced support groups. The alternative method to reach the Alzheimer Network is to call 330-788-9755 anytime to speak about concerns.

WHERE ARE BEARS?: Mill Creek MetroParks Educator Emily Greve will present “Where Are The Bears?” for the Audubon Society of the Mahoning Valley at 7 p.m. today at the Austintown Senior Center, 112 Westchester Drive. Social time is at 6:30 p.m. Greve will discuss the ecology of black bears, the history of their extirpation from the state and their potential for return to Northeast Ohio. CELEBRATION OF SCHOLARS: Inspiring Minds Youngstown will host its annual Celebration of Scholars awards ceremony 6 to 8 p.m. Friday at the Eugenia Atkinson Center in Youngstown.
Over the past 10 years Inspiring Minds has provided an after school program and summer enrichment program to over 1,000 Youngstown youth.

FAMILY DAY: The Early Childhood Resource Center, 6414 Market St., Boardman, will host a free family day event 10 a.m. to noon Saturday. The event will include storytime, crafts, a raffle and refreshments. There will be free infant and toddler clothing from a local children’s retail store. Children ages 1 to 6 are encouraged to come in their pajamas. Parents will be able to meet community partners and learn of local resources to help families. JCC OPEN HOUSE: Camp JCC will host an open house and pool party 1 to 3 p.m. Sunday at the JCC, 505 Gypsy Lane. WILLIAM McKINLEY PROGRAM: The Poland Historical Society will meet at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday at the Little Red Schoolhouse, 4515 Center Road. At 7:30 p.m., local historian and Mahoning Valley native Paul Rohrbaugh will present a program on the life of William McKinley, highlighting the future president’s early ties to Poland Township. Rohrbaugh is the author of ”Favorite Son: The Life and Times of William McKinley.” The presentation is free. McKinley was born Jan. 29, 1843, in Niles.
The society is planning to install a statue of McKinley as a young man. Plans are for the statue to be located on the lawn of village town hall near Yellow Creek. The society is also preparing for a full year of programming around America250.

FUNDRAISER TO HELP MAN: A Youngstown family is turning to the community for support after a local man’s medical condition has changed their lives. Raffaele Mediati was recovering from a stroke when he had outpatient spinal surgery to help restore his mobility. But during the surgery, he suffered spinal cord damage, leaving him a quadriplegic. To help offset medical and care expenses, a fundraiser is planned Sunday at St. Luke Church hall in Boardman. Doctors tell the family the recovery will be 12 to 24 months. BINGO NIGHT: Bingo Night hosted by the Knights Knation Midwest will be played 5:30 to 9 p.m. Saturday at the Metroplex Expo Center in Liberty The event will include an $1,800 Gucci purse raffle. There also will be a 50-50 raffle. Refreshments will be provided.
TOSHI THE DOG: The Girard Free Library will have Tom the librarian and Toshi the therapy dog at 10 a.m. Tuesday. Toshsi is part of Furever Friends Therapy Dogs, a nonprofit registered with the state.
OAKHILL RECRUITMENT: The Oakhill research team is looking for members to do research to compile information on Oakhill Cemetery history. The group does patron questionnaires, veterans replacement headstones and burial cards from the Oakhill Office. The evening features ballroom dance lessons with Sue Shardy and will start with a 5 p.m. Bachata Basics, a 5:30 p.m. intermediate lesson, followed by general dancing, from 6:15 to 9 p.m. A DJ will be playing a mix of ballroom, rhythm, Latin, swing and club dance music.
Fee is $10 for USA Dance members, $15 for nonmembers, $3 for students (full-time high school or college) is open to the public.

LODGE DINNER NIGHT: The Negley Masonic Lodge, 722 Meadow Lane, Columbiana, will host its monthly dinner night 4 to 7 p.m. Saturday or until the food is gone. This month is Soup Night and is all-you-can-eat if dining in. Carryout will be available. There will be a variety of soups available. SOCIETY WELCOMES WALKER: Dave Walker from Van Wert will continue his series on aircraft of World War II, when he speaks about the “heavies” at the World War II Heritage Society’s Jan. 19 meeting at A La Cart Catering in Canfield.
The presentation will be preceded by a buffet meal, for which reservations are due by Thursday to Dave Frank, 330- 757-0515.
Walker has selected four heavy bombers to highlight his PowerPoint presentation. His father served with the 5th Air Force in the Pacific Southwestern Theater, which used B-25 bombers in their battles.
Walker was born, raised and graduated high school in Van Wert. He was included in the final draft call and joined the National Guard. His Military Occupation Specialty was Infantry during his six-year enlistment term.

The program is “Graceful Aging with Dignity and Support,” with Helen Liptak from Home Instead. She will discuss home care, home health care, palliative care and hospice care. This free community outreach social program is the second Monday of each month and open to all senior citizens.

The special raffle this month is a 1954 proof set that is unopened and in the original government packaging.
Every member will be awarded one free coin and may participate in the raffles.
BOARDMAN SOCIETY: The Boardman Historical Society is a non-profit organization based in Boardman, dedicated to preserving and sharing the history of the community. Founded in 1969, the society operates out of a historic building known as the “Old Toll Gate,” which was originally constructed in 1828 and served as a toll booth for the turnpike that ran through Boardman.
The society’s collection includes thousands of artifacts, photographs, documents and other materials related to the history of Boardman and the surrounding region. These items are used to support the society’s mission of educating the public about the area’s past and promoting an appreciation for local history.
The Boardman Historical Society also hosts a variety of events throughout the year, including lectures, tours, and historical reenactments. These events provide opportunities for community members to learn more about the area’s rich history and to connect with others who share an interest in preserving and celebrating it.

TREE RECYCLING: The sixth annual community Christmas tree recycling event is being offered Thursday and Friday for residents of Mahoning and Trumbull counties. Guidelines for pickup: trees must be placed at curbside the night before pickup and all decorations, lights, and ornaments must be removed from the tree. No artificial trees or wreaths.
GIRARD LIBRARY PROGRAMS: The Girard Free Library will welcome Angie Alberni, certified personal trainer and fitness nutrition expert, at noon Saturday to discuss healthy eating habits, including reading nutrition labels and planning balanced meals.
