COMMUNITY NEWS: Food bank launches 2025 Harvest for Hunger campaign
HARVEST FOR HUNGER: Second Harvest Food Bank of the Mahoning Valley invites the community to participate in the 34th annual Harvest for Hunger Campaign during March, April and May.
Harvest for Hunger is a food and funds drive that takes place each year to help the food bank restock its shelves for the spring and summer months. Check Out Hunger, a cashier-led fundraising effort in Giant Eagle and GetGo stores across the region, gives customers the opportunity to donate $2, $5, $10 or another preferred amount at the register through May 31. All funds raised and food collected remain in Columbiana, Mahoning and Trumbull counties. Last year, Harvest for Hunger raised more than $351,000 and collected nearly 14,000 pounds of food, which provided more than 1.7 million meals in the tri-county area.
Second Harvest Food Bank distributed 10.6 million pounds of food through 160 partner agencies and programs, helping to provide over 8,833,000 meals in the Mahoning Valley in 2024. For information, call 330-792-5522 or visit www.mahoningvalleysecondharvest.org.
CLOTHING OFFERED: Helping Hands Closet at Western Reserve United Methodist Church, 4580 Canfield Road, has new and gently used clothing for families. March and April will feature “Dollar Days” with each item being $1. The closet is open 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Tuesdays.
SOCIETY PRESENTS PROGRAM: The Mahoning County Chapter of the Ohio Genealogical Society will meet at 7 p.m. Wednesday at St. Charles Church’s ministry building, 7345 Westview Drive, Boardman. The program will be on genealogical research on the British Isles and Ireland for people with Anglo, Scottish, Welsh or Irish roots. Visitors are welcome.
EASTER BASKETS: Emmanuel Community Care Center in Girard is hosting an Easter basket distribution for children ages 2 to 11 whose parents are registered at the center. Those registered who wish to receive an Easter basket should call the center between 9 a.m. and 3 p.m. through April 4. All families will be called when baskets are ready to be picked up. Individuals who would like to donate candy or small toys to make up the Easter baskets should contact the center at 330-545-4301. Items need to be delivered to the center by April 1.
SOCIETY SPEAKER: The Boardman Historical Society invites the public to hear author and historian Thomas Welsh speak at 10 a.m. Saturday at Boardman Park’s St. James Church on “The Mahoning Valley Brewing Tradition.”
ANNUAL TEA: The Polish Arts Club of Youngstown announces its annual Scholarship, Art, Music and Tea reception 1 to 3:30 p.m. March 9 at Butler North. This event kicks off the club’s 90th year of promoting Polish culture in the Valley.
Harpist Kirk Kupensky will perform selections by Vivaldi, Mozart, Debussy and Polish composer Chopin. In addition to select readings of Polish authors / poets, the club will recognize this year’s scholarship recipients followed by a tea and dessert reception. Theevent is free and open to the public.
MINISTRIES OFFERED: Hubbard Church of the Nazarene, 1815 Cherry Lane Drive, will offer free clothing and food ministries. The Shared Blessings Clothing ministry is offered 6 to 7 p.m. Wednesdays with gently used and sometimes new clothing and shoes for adults and children. The food ministry is noon to 1 p.m. the third Friday of each month.
LIT YOUNGSTOWN: Lit Youngstown is celebrating the 10th year for its reading series at 7 p.m. on the first Wednesday of each month at Westside Bowl, 2617 Mahoning Ave., Youngstown. The First Wednesday Reader Series will feature Midwestern authors of poetry, science fiction, literary fiction and journalism.
The free reading will be followed by an open mic.
