Mercy Health to close Canfield surgery center

CANFIELD — Mercy Health plans to close its Canfield Surgery Center on June 1, according to a statement Monday from the health care provider.

The decision to close the center, 4147 Westford Drive, was made jointly by Bon Secours Mercy Health Ambulatory Ventures and Compass Surgical, according to the statement.

“Mercy Health is working with patients, physicians and associates to ensure a smooth transition going forward, including working closely with impacted Compass Surgical associates to identify opportunities within Mercy Health and to help them make informed decisions about their professional career,” according to the statement.

The ambulatory center opened in July 2021.

According to a Mercy Health blog post then, the center offered orthopedic, podiatric and plastic procedures as well as some producers in other medical specialties.

It was meant to help ease the burden on and complement St. Elizabeth Youngstown and St. Elizabeth Boardman hospitals by allowing ambulatory surgical procedures in Canfield, allowing Mercy Health to provide for the more complex procedures at the hospitals.

The facility was expected to employ 15 to 20 people, however, it’s unclear how many it employs today.
