Ohio ranks high in manufacturing jobs

WARREN — Ohio ranks third in the U.S. for the number of manufacturing jobs, with more than 683,000, or more than 1 in 8, according to the state.

In addition, more than 7,000 manufacturing openings are listed at ohiomeansjobs.com, the state’s online career counseling center that helps connect jobseekers with employers.

“Ohio has always been a leader in manufacturing and now, with high-tech manufacturing jobs on the rise, average incomes in this sector are exceeding $70,000 a year. Some manufacturing jobs are paying over $100,000 a year,” Lt. Gov. Jon Husted said in a release Friday to mark Manufacturing Day 2023. “The future of manufacturing is very bright, with a combination of new investments and many existing companies expanding their operations.”

Ohio ranks first in the nation for glass, plastics and rubber product manufacturing employment. It ranks second for paper manufacturing, primary metal manufacturing, machinery manufacturing, and electrical equipment, appliance and component manufacturing employment, the release states.

Training for some manufacturing careers can be obtained through apprenticeships. The Ohio Department of Job and Family Services manages the state’s ApprenticeOhio program, which registers programs that meet national criteria for quality and safety.

Of the 35 new ApprenticeOhio programs added in the last year, 13 were for manufacturing-related occupations. In-demand manufacturing occupations with apprenticeship opportunities include millwrights, sheet metal workers, structural iron and steel workers, electricians, glaziers, carpenters, brick and block masons, and plumbers, pipefitters and steamfitters.

According to the release, Ohio ranks third in the nation and first in the Midwest in the number of apprentices, with more than 21,000 enrolled. ApprenticeOhio programs offer a combination of paid on-the-job training, related technical instruction and mentoring for skilled occupations.
