Dealers see uptick in new car sales

WARREN — New vehicle sales across Trumbull, Mahoning and Columbiana counties last month were 16.4% ahead of the mark auto dealers hit in April 2023, according to the latest data from the Greater Cleveland Automobile Dealers’ Association.

Dealers sold 2,178 new vehicles to buyers in the Mahoning Valley, up from 1,871.

Overall sales of new and used vehicles for the month, meanwhile, rose 19.6%, from 3,643 in April 2023 to 4,358 last month, the data shows. Used vehicles for the month rose 26.5%, from 1,654 to 2,093.

For 2024 through April, compared to the same four months in 2023, new vehicle sales are up 21.7%, from 7,239 to 8,812. Overall sales rose, too, from 14,938 to 17,661, a difference of 18.2%. There were 8,308 used vehicles sold, up 16.3% from 7,140.

Dealerships in Mahoning County with the most sales to local buyers were Boardman Subaru, the No. 1 selling dealer in the Valley, 254; Ken Ganley Kia of Boardman, 212; and Fred Martin Ford, 200.

The top new vehicle sellers were Boardman Subaru, 158; Ken Ganley Kia of Boardman, 98; and #1 Cochran Chevrolet and #1 Cochran Honda, 96 a piece. Topping the used vehicle list were Ken Ganley Kia of Boardman, 114; Fred Martin Ford, 111; and Greenwood Chevrolet, 97.

Across northern Ohio, dealers in April sold 18,890 new cars, trucks and SUVs, an increase of 8.3% from April 2023, according to the association. For the year, sales are up 6.1% percent.

“Consumers continued a healthy sales pace in April, even though interest rates remain high,” Lou Vitantonio, dealers’ association president, said. “Adjustments to both new and used vehicle prices will fluctuate with the introduction of more incentives and as inventories grow. We expect this current sales trend to carry on through the end of the year.”

The top-selling brands in April in the region were Chevrolet, 2,600; Ford, 2,404; Honda, 1,810; Kia, 1,502; and Toyota, 1,284, according to the association.
