All-electric Blazer to use Ultium platform

General Motors has unveiled an all-new 2024 Blazer EV police pursuit vehicle that it says can provide “uncompromising performance and capability” for officers.

Chevrolet is utilizing the largest possible Ultium battery available for this Blazer EV PPV to support the electrical needs of a patrol car needed for law enforcement.

Ultium Cells, the mass producer of battery cells for GM’s electric vehicles, is a joint venture between GM and South Korea’s LG Energy Solution. In addition to the factory in Lordstown, which has been in production since last August, others in Spring Hill, Tenn., and Lansing, Mich., are in the works.

Ultium Cells will provide battery cell capacity to support GM’s North American electric vehicle assembly capacity of more than 1 million units by 2025, while supporting GM’s plans to supply other automotive companies and other industries including rail, aerospace, heavy trucking and marine customers.

GM stated that its Blazer EV PPV is the first pursuit-rated all-electric Chevrolet in more than 60 years of tailoring vehicles for the rigors of law enforcement duty, the automaker said in a news release.

The announcement comes as more states and municipalities implement carbon-reduction plans and targets. Many patrol cars spend a lot of their time idling, creating emissions from running a gasoline engine to support the electrical loads of a law enforcement vehicle.

The 2024 Chevrolet Blazer EV PPV begins production in the first quarter of 2024, with pricing and order guide availability expected mid-2023.

“Chevy’s commitment to meeting the needs of law enforcement is rooted in decades of cooperation with police agencies across North America,” Ed Peper, U.S. vice president of GM Fleet, said. “This purpose-built electrified Blazer EV PPV will have excellent pursuit performance, the reliability of a Chevrolet and fast-charging necessary to be a high-performance patrol vehicle.”

The Blazer EV PPV will be based off the Blazer EV SS retail model.

Final specifications and range will be available closer to launch, in the first quarter of 2024.

It will be offered with specific police content including skid plates, police-rated tires, steel wheels and additional emergency equipment support.

The Blazer EV PPV has a low center of gravity, thanks to the roughly 1,200-pound battery pack mounted low in the chassis. It also employs Brembo brakes based on the high-performance Blazer EV SS, which are designed to offer superior stopping power.

“The Chevrolet Blazer EV PPV is designed to meet or exceed the demands of the nationally recognized Michigan State Police annual vehicle testing,” said Peper. “Its performance will be a game-changer.”
