Trumbull and Mahoning counties, like most of Ohio’s 88 counties in January, saw their unemployment rate climb from December, but not high enough to be among the seven with jobless rates of 8 percent or more.

Similarly, the rates in Warren and Youngstown — the two most populated cities in region — grew and edged close to the 10 percent mark, territory occupied by just Maple Heights, Cleveland and Garfield Heights.

In Trumbull County, the rate was 7.6 percent, 1.2 percent greater than in December, and Mahoning County recorded a rate of 7.3 percent, 1.1 percent greater than the prior month, according to the latest data from the Ohio Department of Job and Family Services.

In January 2020, Trumbull County was at 7.6 percent and Mahoning County, 7.1 percent.

Across the state, Noble County in southeast Ohio had the worst rate, 8.5 percent, and Holmes County in the central part of the state had the lowest rate, 3.1 percent.

The other counties with rates of 8 percent or greater are Huron and Cuyahoga, 8 percent; Erie and Morgan, 8.1 percent; and Monroe and Ottawa, 8.4 percent.

Warren’s rate in January was 9.6 percent, which is 1.6 percent greater than in December. Youngstown was 9.3 percent, 0.9 percent greater than the previous month.

In January 2020, Warren posted a rate of 8.3 percent and Youngstown, 7.7 percent.

The state will release February rates March 30.
