Dark art builds community at Art on Park

Since David Wheeler started curating exhibitions at downtown Warren’s Art on Park building, the October show Dark on Park has been a favorite among both artists and attendees. The ninth edition will open Saturday with a reception from 7 to 10 p.m. “I’d say it’s the favorite of the particular art community that we attract,” Wheeler said. “Why is that? Several free events open to the public will be a part of Lit Youngstown’s 9th Fall Literary Festival, which runs today through Saturday. Authors David Huebert and Sean Prentiss will read from their work and do a book signing at 7 p.m. Friday at St. John’s Episcopal Church, 323 Wick Ave., Youngstown. Playhouse Youth Theatre stages Shakespeare Playhouse Youth Theatre will perform the William Shakespeare comedy “A Midsummer Night’s Dream” this weekend. Isa Foltz directs the comedy about four young lovers who get entangled in a series of mishaps and unexpected connections caused by a band of mischievous fairies and their enchanted love potions. Easy Street’s ‘Miracle’ coming to Powers Easy Street Productions’ “Miracle on Easy Street” returns to Powers Auditorium from Dec. 19 to 21. When a loved one dies due to addiction, many people try to hide those details. Packard band celebrates 70 years with Sunday’s concert

The W.D. Packard Concert Band will celebrate its 70th anniversary with the debut of a newly commissioned work. Jerry Ascione, a 1975 Dana School of Music graduate who spent 31 years as a musician, composer and arranger with the U.S. Navy bands, composed “We, Are Packard” and will conduct the work at Sunday’s concert at Packard Music Hall. Ascione has written several pieces for the band and knows the ensemble well. “I went to college with a lot of those folks,” Ascione said. “I know pretty much everybody.” He drew upon those connections as he was writing.
