Block Party brings music, laughter to B&O Station

The Neighborhood Events will bring laughter as well as music to this year’s The Block Party.

A comedy stage joins the music stage that’s been part of the event since it started in 2018.

Alison Green, who co-founded The Neighborhood Events with Mikey Caraballo and Danny Svenson, said they had a comedy set by Matt O’Nesti that first year and had talked about making that a regular component of the event, but it didn’t happen.

“This year we were like, ‘Let’s do it,’ so him and another local comedian, Chloe Jackson, who organizes a lot of shows in the Youngstown and Warren area, came together and brought a lot of their comedy friends from Youngstown, Cleveland and Pittsburgh and set up a comedy stage for us,” Green said.

O’Nesti will do a set on the music stage and also host the comedy stage, which will feature appearances by Jackson, Martin Malloy, Def Goldblum, Murr, Jams by Aimlis, Angela Fro, Dezhawn France and Harrison Poole.

The music stage lineup features Rev. Gill & the Fishermen at 5:45 p.m., O’Nesti at 6:30 p.m., Krypto Devine at 7 p.m., Jul Big Green at 8 p.m. and Miki Fiki at 9:15 p.m. with a jam session closing the event at 10:30 p.m.

Miki Fiki, the name Ted Hartog uses to release his alt-pop, is a returning headliner.

“We met Ted on the road with Spirit of the Bear (Svenson’s band),” Green said. “We met Ted four or five years ago, and he came up for The Block Party. This year one of our headliners fell out. We were going to have MUNNYCAT (the Los Angeles-based duo featuring Mahoning Valley natives Katianne Timko and Khaled Tabbara), and they were going to do their album release show, but with the travel and the dates, it didn’t work out. So we reached out to Ted. He has some new music out and has been touring for the past few years, so he’s going to be traveling up with his band from Nashville.”

New this year is a tattoo artist who will be doing flash tattoos, and organizers worked with the Youngstown Flea to create a market with 30 vendors that will be open from at least 4 to 8 p.m.

“What’s been great about working with the Youngstown Flea is they’ve really been able to look at their Rolodex of people and put out an open call to give us a little bit more variety. We normally just have the vintage clothing and then some snacks here and there, but this year it’s going to be a lot more diverse.”

If the weather cooperates, Green said they’re hoping the event draws at least 800 people.

Even though the event is adding a comedy stage, here is something that’s no joke — at a time when the cost of everything, particularly live entertainment, is rising, Neighborhood Events cut the entry fee for The Block Party in half from $10 to $5.

“It’s always been our goal to get a little bit cheaper, to make it more accessible to everybody in the community,” Green said. “We lowered the (advance) ticket price, and it’s also going to be $5 at the door, just trying to make the cost a little bit more accessible.”

Organizers also have been distributing free passes at the Youngstown Flea.

“We don’t want there to be a barrier to entry for people who just want to come and shop the flea and maybe not stay for the music or the comedy,” Green said.

“We want this to be the biggest one yet.”
