Straw Hat stages ‘Pinocchio Jr.’
Disney’s “My Son Pinocchio Jr.” is the next production in the Straw Hat Theatre summer season at Ashtabula Arts Center.
The musical features music and lyrics by Stephen Schwartz (“Wicked,” “Godspell,” “Pocahontas”) and is a comedic reimagining of the Disney animated feature. The Blue Fairy (played by Claire McMurtrie), having granted toymaker Geppetto’s (Travis Greenaway) wish to bring his beloved puppet Pinocchio (Emerald Bopp) to life, finds herself taking complaints from the frustrated new father as he learns that having a child brings about a world of challenges. Geppetto struggles to make his son “the perfect boy,” only to lose him to a gang of Roustabouts. It’s only when faced with the thought of never seeing Pinocchio again that Geppetto truly learns the joys of being a father and loving his child unconditionally.
It is directed by Sarah Riley with music direction by Jeannie Jyurovat.
“My Son Pinocchio Jr.” will be staged at 7 p.m. Friday, Saturday and Sunday through July 7 on the grounds of AAC, 2928 W. 13th St., Ashtabula. There also will be a sensory-friendly performance at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday.
Tickets are $15 for adults, $13 for students, senior citizens and military and $11 for children ages 2 to 12 if purchased in advance at ashtabulaartscenter.org or by calling 440-964-3396. Tickets are $17, $15 and $13 at the door.
