Valley native brings Shy Blossom to Youngstown

South Florida band Shy Blossom first bloomed in the Mahoning Valley.
Shy Blossom is led by Adriana McDonald, who spent the first 12 years of her life in Cortland, Lordstown and Garrettsville before her family moved south. The band will play its first Ohio date ever on July 5 at Westside Bowl.
While playing music didn’t start until she went to Florida, it always was a part of her life.
“My dad (Sean McDonald) has always done music, so I was always surrounded by him playing music,” McDonald said. “My mom would turn on music every single night as well, and we would do dance parties.”
Her mom (Angela McDonald) was co-owner of the former Warren club Gargoyle, and the father of her half sisters is Barley Rantilla of Rebreather.
“I was definitely influenced by music in my early years when I lived in Ohio, but moving to Florida was definitely a big change,” she said. “I was super shy and couldn’t talk to anybody, and that’s when I really found solace in music and started focusing on it a lot more.”
McDonald’s devotion to music intensified during the COVID-19 pandemic.
“I was like locked in my room and isolated, and that’s when I finally picked up the guitar,” McDonald said. “I asked my dad to teach me like five chords, and I taught myself the rest of what I know. Ever since then, I’ve been writing my own songs. I did my school’s talent show, and my parents influenced me to do my first solo gig at a place called Unwind, and ever since then I’ve been doing solo gigs maybe 10 to 15 times a month, and then I started recording with Howard Merlin at Farmadelica Sound in 2023. He’s the one that inspired me to start my own band.”
McDonald described herself as a big fan of ’90s alternative acts such as Fiona Apple, PJ Harvey, Radiohead and Mazzy Star and also included contemporary artists such as Mitski and Lana Del Rey among her influences.
The band released its debut album, “Bloom,” in 2024 and the EP “Stardust” the following year. Former Pearl Jam drummer David Abbruzzese appears on five “Bloom” tracks, and violinist Bobby Hawk, who has worked with Taylor Swift, can be heard on the single “Nothing to Say.”
Joining McDonald, lead vocals and guitar, in Shy Blossom are Nicole Alberti, bass, and Julie Copithorne, drums.
“People have moved on and came in, and we have a wonderful lineup right now,” she said. “I really love the members that are my band right now.”
A new single, “Eternity,” will be released at the end of July. And as the band makes its way north next week, Shy Blossom plans to record three songs while in Nashville.
“We’re also working on a whole bunch of other songs,” McDonald said. “There’s definitely a lot of songs in the works.”
While the band may play a couple of covers at Westside Bowl, the setlist will emphasize McDonald’s original songs.
“We’ll be doing a wide range of emotional songs,” she said. “We got some pretty sad ones in there, so maybe people will be expecting to cry, maybe laugh. Definitely have fun. We’ve got a lot of fun, upbeat songs that I can’t wait to play for my family and friends up there, and it’s gonna be a fun show.”
