Kamuf, Zaleski join Boardman bands for jazz fest

Trumpet player Mike Kamuf and alto saxophonist Mark Zaleski will be the guest artists for the 22nd Boardman High School Jazz Fest.

Kamuf is a Cleveland native who earned his bachelor’s degree in music education and jazz performance from Youngstown State University’s Dana School of Music. He has played and recorded with the Woody Herman, Tommy Dorsey and Alan Baylock orchestras and is a composer and arranger of band, jazz and orchestra music.

Boardman band director Tom Ruggieri played with Kamuf in Jazz Ensemble 1 when both were students at YSU. Ruggieri first met Zaleski when his son studied with Zaleski at Berklee College of Music in Boston.

According to Ruggieri, “Over the years, we arranged for him to visit my jazz rehearsals, where he played and talked to my Boardman students, who loved every minute. I vowed to get him back to Ohio to perform with us,”

Zaleski has worked with such artists as Dave Brubeck, Christian McBride, The Louis Cole Big Band, Lake Street Dive, Ian Anderson, Rakalam Bob Moses, the Either / Orchestra and Jason Palmer.

The concert will feature performances by Boardman’s Jazz Ensembles 1 & 2, the 8th Grade Jazz Ensemble, and the 2K24 Pop/Rock Band and a mix of classic and modern tunes including “Comin’ Home Baby, ” Don’t Get Around Much Anymore,” “Cry Me a River” and ” Ain’t We Got Fun.”

The 22nd BHS Jazz Fest starts at 7 p.m. Tuesday at the Boardman Performing Arts Center, 7777 Glenwood Ave. Doors open at 6:15 p.m. Admission is $3 at the door with senior citizens admitted free.
