No ponchos required for Sam Hunt’s return

It’s safe to say the weather will be better when Sam Hunt returns to the Mahoning Valley on Sunday for a concert at the Covelli Centre.

Hunt’s last local gig was a very soggy show in 2022 at the Canfield Fair, when nearly 4 inches of rain fell in the late afternoon / early evening and delayed the start of the concert by about 90 minutes.

Even if the unseasonably warm (and dry) forecast for Sunday doesn’t hold, audience members will only have to worry about the walk from their cars to the venue for the indoor show.

Hunt’s tour kicked off earlier this month in Grand Rapids, Mich. The country hitmaker is happy to be back out on the road.

In an interview with Beasley Media Group, Hunt said, “You write these songs in little rooms in Nashville, and you hope that they mean something to somebody. It’s hard to believe that that’s true until you get out there and see the smiles on people’s faces and see people enjoying themselves and having a good time, and it really gives a lot of meaning to the whole thing.”

Hunt’s 2020 album, “Southside,” featured four country chart toppers – “Body Like a Back Road,” “Kinfolks,” “Hard to Forget” and “Breaking Up Was Easy in the ’90s.”

He’s released a few singles since “Southside,” including another number one hit, “23” – but there’s no word on a follow up album. During an appearance last fall on “Good Morning America,” Hunt said he’s been focused more on just releasing one song at a time. His most recent single is “Came the Closet.”

None of the acts on the bill Sunday are strangers to local audiences.

Brett Young was the headliner for a 2021 show at the Youngstown Foundation Amphitheatre. Young had six consecutive number one hits on the Billboard country airplay chart between 2017 and 2020 – “In Case You Didn’t Know,” “Like I Loved You,” “Mercy,” “Here Tonight,” “Catch” and “Lady.”

Lily Rose was one of the openers for Hunt’s Canfield Fair show.

In the news release announcing the tour, Rose said, “I can’t believe this is the third year we get to go out with Sam. His influence has not only guided my decision to move to Nashville but he also made me feel like there was a space in Country music for me sonically. We’ve now become such great friends with his whole entire team and they are the kindest and best in the business. We’re stoked to go back out with him.”

Based on the map on Ticketmaster’s website, the show is only a few hundred tickets shy of a sellout.
