Musicians Play for Palestine, Cedars celebrates 10 years
Assorted ramblings from the world of entertainment:
• Several area acts will play a benefit show Sunday to raise awareness for the plight of East Palestine residents affected by the Norfolk Southern train derailment and toxic chemical spill.
Play for Palestine will feature performances by The Conkle Brothers, Leo D’Angelo, Hayden Brooke, Lexi Kays, Olivia Figley, Aimlis, Pete the V, Unc D & Thin Thickett, MOOT GURU, Rory McClellan, Brent Bregar & the Lucky Nothings and others.
The event runs from 2 to 7 p.m. Sunday at the Vagabond Theater, 5 N. Main St., Columbiana. Admission is free, but volunteers from The Brightside Project will be collecting donations. Smoke Worx Street Cuisine food truck also will be serving food behind the theater and donating a portion of the money from sales to the cause.
The Brightside Project will be distributing water, food, personal care items, paper products, air filters, nasal cleansing kits and pillows for children from noon to 4 p.m. Saturday at East Palestine High School.
• Cedars West End is celebrating its 10th anniversary at 706 Steel St., Youngstown, with a pair of events this weekend.
Of course, Cedars’ history goes back far more than a decade. The downtown Youngstown location was a revered live music venue dating back to the mid-’70s. When the owners were forced to relocate, they continued their support of local acts that play original music.
The 10th anniversary weekend will include some of the old and the new.
Friday’s lineup will include indie rock and emo / post punk acts the Smokey Honey Bluesband and Neighbor Dan. Doors open at 7 p.m., music starts at 9:45 p.m. and the cover charge is $10.
Saturday’s show features two bands that date back to the Cedars’ heyday in the 1980s but continue to perform.
The 8 Balls, which in 2019 finally recorded the songs it regularly played at the venue decades ago, are scheduled to go on at 9:30 p.m., followed by The Infidels. That band expects to release its first album in 20 years by the end of 2023, and it played a few of the new tunes at its Thankgiving eve show at Cedars.
Admission on Saturday is $15.
l Elevation Group announced the lineup this week for WonderWorks, its new two-day music and arts festival at Hartwood Acres outside of Pittsburgh.
Those surprised by the country and hip hop shift in the bookings for Elevation Group’s WonderStruck festival in Kirtland will find several familiar names at WonderWorks.
At least six of the acts playing WonderWorks previously played WonderStruck precursor LaureLive — Hozier, The Head and the Heart, X Ambassadors and The Blue Stones on May 27, and The Revivalists and Youngstown’s The Vindys on May 28.
Other acts on the first day include COIN, Stephen Sanchez, Andy Frasco & the UN, Smallpools (a previous Federal Frenzy headliner), almost monday, Michigander, Ruby Waters and Abby Holiday.
Jason Mraz and his Superband will be the headliner on May 28 and joined by Mt. Joy, The Airborne Toxic Event, Matt Maeson, Wilderado, The Aces, Daisy the Great, The Heavy Heavy, Jess Williamson and Ax and the Hatchetmen.
